Telangana: The Drugs Control Administration, Telangana has cracked down on the illegal sale of abortion and medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) kits, suspending the licences of 165 medical shops and cancelling those of seven more following a series of statewide raids.
A total of 809 inspections were carried out between August 22 and September 15, 2025, covering medical shops and the premises of quacks/unqualified practitioners.
During the inspections, special emphasis was laid on checking the indiscriminate sale of Abortion Kits/MTP Kits (Abortifacient Drugs) including Mifepristone Tablets, Misoprostol Tablets, etc., classified under Schedule H of the Drugs Rules.
During the special raids, officers of the Drugs Control Administration detected several discrepancies related to the sale of Abortion Kits / MTP (Medical Termination of Pregnancy) Kits (Abortifacient Drugs) in 234 medical shops.
The officers detected several violations related to the indiscriminate sale of Abortion Kits (Abortifacient Drugs), including the sale of such drugs without a prescription from a Registered Medical Practitioner, sale without issuing bills, non-maintenance and failure to produce sales bills, dispensing of Abortion Kits in the absence of a Registered Pharmacist, failure to produce purchase bills, failure to maintain prescription drug registers, irregularities in maintaining copies of sales and purchase bills, and other violations of the Drugs Rules.
Consequently, Show Cause Notices were issued to the firms violating the rules. So far, the licences of 165 medical shops have been suspended, while the licences of seven shops have been cancelled as part of departmental action in accordance with the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the rules made thereunder.
