Mankind Pharma launches Black Fungus drug Posaforce 100 in India
Delhi: Marking a significant step forward in Mucormycosis drug development, Mankind Pharma declared on Thursday that it has launched Posaconazole Gastro resistance pill in the country under the brand name Posaforce 100, which is intended to treat black fungus.
As per reports of the second wave of COVID-19; there are over 16 lakhs active cases and over 3.4 lakhs fatalities. India has also reported more than 12,000 cases of deadly black fungus, so far with Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana, accounting for the maximum number of cases.
Posaconazole Gastro-Resistant tablets are for treating mucormycosis patients. Posaconazole is found to be safer and effective drug of choice for the management of Mucormycosis. Recently Posaconazole has also been approved by Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). In addition, guidelines from AIIMS and ICMR have also recommended use of Posaconazole as an effective option for the management of mucormycosis. Posaconazole is USFDA approved antifungal drug with minimal potential for nephrotoxicity & excellent tolerability profile.
The risk of contracting black fungus is extremely high in immunosuppressant cases or when the immunity is low because of the utilization of steroids, like in the treatment of Covid-19. Though steroids reduce inflammation in the lungs, they also reduce immunity and raise blood sugar levels. It is therefore vital for Covid-19 patients, especially with diabetes, to rigorously screen and control their sugar.
On the launch, Mankind Pharma commented, "As the cases of black fungus are increasing day by day, the product has been launched under POSACONAZOLE 100 tablets to fight against this infection. We at Mankind always strive to launch affordable medicines with an endeavour to achieve the best quality standards in the pharmaceutical industry."
Black fungus commonly occurs in soil, and airborne spores often produce infections. Life threatening conditions like severe COVID-19 infection; prolonged immune suppression or reduced immunity, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus or haematological malignancies and even open wounds contamination with Mucorales can lead to this rare, but if left untreated, severe infection.
