No Pharmacist, No Business: 3 Medical Stores Sealed in MP for Operating Without Qualified Pharmacists

During the inspection, officials discovered that all three pharmacies were functioning without the mandatory presence of a registered pharmacist, a clear violation of the Pharmacy Act, 1948, and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. When asked to produce records of licensed personnel, the store owners failed to comply, leading to the immediate sealing of their shops. Notices were also issued, and the outlets were directed to halt all operations until they met the required legal conditions.

Officials stated that this action comes as part of a broader state-level crackdown on unregulated pharmacies, especially after the recent Chhindwara tragedy, where 24 children reportedly died after consuming toxic cough syrup. Following that incident, the Madhya Pradesh Pharmacy Council and local health departments have intensified surprise inspections to ensure that all pharmacies operate strictly under professional supervision.

The Satna district administration further warned that running a medical store without a qualified pharmacist could attract strict penalties — including fines up to ₹2 lakh, imprisonment of up to three months, or both. Authorities stressed that such measures are vital to prevent mishandling of medicines, incorrect drug dispensing, and health risks to the public.

Dainik Bhaskar reports that the SDM’s office has confirmed that more surprise inspections will be conducted in the coming weeks. Officials reiterated that even a single lapse in compliance could endanger lives, and strict action will continue against any outlet found violating pharmacy regulations.
