Sildenafil, Tadalafil Under Scanner as DCGI Launches Crackdown on Illegal Sexual Enhancement Drug Sales
New Delhi: The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has ordered a nationwide crackdown on the illegal sale and distribution of sexual enhancement medicines amid rising concerns over counterfeit drugs, misuse and unauthorised online sales across the country.
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has directed drug regulators in states and Union Territories to take strict action against the unauthorised manufacture, sale and promotion of sexual enhancement medicines being sold without valid prescriptions. Authorities have expressed concern over the increasing misuse of such medicines, particularly among younger consumers.
Officials stated that medicines including sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil and dapoxetine are allegedly being sold through online platforms, unauthorised pharmacies and illegal clinics without proper medical supervision. Regulators warned that uncontrolled consumption of these medicines could lead to severe health complications including irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, dizziness and dangerous drug interactions.
The regulatory authorities also raised concerns regarding the growing circulation of counterfeit and substandard medicines through black-market supply chains and digital platforms. According to officials, several fake products may contain harmful ingredients or incorrect dosages, posing serious risks to public health.
As part of the nationwide enforcement drive, authorities have reportedly been instructed to conduct raids on illegal clinics and unauthorised pharmacies, intensify monitoring of online medicine sales and strengthen prescription verification systems. Increased scrutiny of social media advertisements, e-commerce platforms and digital networks involved in promotion of such medicines has also been planned.
The action follows concerns raised over the increasing misuse of sexual enhancement medicines and the easy availability of counterfeit drugs through online channels. Experts have warned that illegal pharmaceutical networks are increasingly using digital platforms and messaging applications to target consumers.
Authorities told The420.in that stricter enforcement measures and coordinated monitoring will continue to prevent misuse of prescription medicines and dismantle unauthorised pharmaceutical networks operating across the country.
