NIPER Mohali: PhD student hangs self
Mohali: A first-year Ph.D. scholar medico at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself on Monday evening.
The deceased have been identified as Om Naik, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was a Ph.D. scholar of toxicology at NIPER, Mohali.
Naik who lives in a single-occupancy room was supposed to play volleyball on Monday. When he did not turn at the match, his teammates started calling him over the phone. After receiving no response from him, one of the teammates went to his hostel to check on him but the door was locked. So he went to the room from the other side and was the first to find Naik's body hanging from the ceiling and it was 5:30 pm at that moment. Soon he called the hostel staff and police.

Upon the arrival of the police, they had to break open the doors of the room as it was found bolted from inside. Naik was then immediately rushed to a hospital in Sohana where the doctors of that hospital declared him brought dead.
According to The Tribune reports, Naik was experiencing psychological distress after the controversy over his text message to a female student of the institute erupted. Police said he was sent a notice a few days ago to explain his position regarding the text message for which he apologized to the girl.

Inspector Gagandeep Singh, station house officer (SHO), Phase-11 police station told HT, "He left behind a suicide note in which he held only himself responsible for his extreme step and sought forgiveness from his family," said inspector Gagandeep Singh, station house officer (SHO), Phase-11 police station.
Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been initiated by Phase 11 police. Gagandeep Singh said, "The police have sent the phone of the deceased to a forensic lab to unlock it and retrieve the data, including call details and chats, regarding the case. Further investigation is on. No written complaint has been received against anyone till now."
Police have moved Naik's body for autopsy to the civil hospital in Phase 6. The student's parents arrived in the city on Tuesday and asked the police for a fair investigation into the matter.
