Mathura: Maternal mortality, or in simpler terms, death of a woman during pregnancy or childbirth, is a problem that plagues the country at large. It is even worse in Uttar Pradesh, which has the highest maternal mortality rate in the country — 285 out of 100,000 live births, against a national average of 167 out of 100,000 live births.

The major contributing factors to high maternal mortality rate include negligence towards women’s health needs, malnutrition, unwanted pregnancies, septic abortions, non- availability of antenatal care and proper delivery facilities, and the lack of adequate tertiary care facilities.

Talking about the high maternal mortality rate in the region, Niira Radia , Chairperson of Mathura-based Nayati Healthcare said, Niira Radia added, “Creating awareness around maternal and child health is not just the responsibility of the government, the private sector has an equal responsibility to shoulder. Being the largest healthcare provider of the region, we have been undertaking several awareness and educational programs to reach out to women across communities at the grass roots including working with government. Besides, we also have a massive outreach program dedicated to improving maternal health outcome and enhancing quality of life in the most remote locations across Western Uttar Pradesh, Eastern Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.

We have also been promoting women health by creating platforms such as the Well Women Club, where women get together to discuss health issues with our doctors and also get benefits offered to them on treatment. ”

In order to improve maternal care facilities, and to decrease the maternal mortality rate Nayati Healthcare has joined forces with the government. Nayati works closely with 10 out of 14 Community Health Centres (CHCs) in the region.

The group hospitals in Uttar Pradesh, Nayati Medicity Mathura and Nayati Hospital Agra – work on the preventive aspects by observing several international health days including World Nutrition Day, World Breastfeeding Week, and World Health Day, in order to create awareness among beneficiaries.

Also, various training centres of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) were also provided audio/video training material by Nayati.

Taking maternal care up by a notch, Nayati Healthcare’s medical mobile units take antenatal and postnatal care to the smallest of the villages in the regions, ensuring access to proper medical facilities to women living in the hinterlands.
