Resolving Structural Patterns of Transient Feathery Cataracts in 25 Gas-Filled Post-Vitrectomy Eyes, Suggests Study
A recent study published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology in May 2026 identified three distinct, spontaneously resolving structural patterns of transient feathery cataracts in 25 gas-filled post-vitrectomy eyes, demonstrating complete clearance without intervention in all cases within 7 to 10 days.

Excluding eyes with pre-existing capsular defects or poor imaging quality, the primary endpoint focused on the morphological classification of posterior lens vacuoles, which was independently validated by two senior vitreoretinal specialists.

Dome-Shaped Predominance: Investigators revealed that a prominent, discrete dome-like vacuolar configuration was the most frequent structural anomaly, occurring in exactly 60% (15 out of 25) of the evaluated eyes and typically resolving completely between five to seven days.
Diffuse Thickening Variation: Researchers noted that 28% of the cohort, representing 7 eyes, demonstrated a widespread posterior subcapsular expansion intermixed with ill-defined cystic spaces that safely vanished completely within a seven- to ten-day timeframe.
Cuboidal Lesion Rarity: Analysis established that full-thickness, cuboidal-like vacuoles extending through the entire posterior subcapsular region were the least common manifestation, affecting only 12% (3 eyes) but similarly disappearing spontaneously by the tenth postoperative day.
Tamponade Independence: Observers confirmed that these three distinct structural manifestations remained completely independent of the specific intraocular gas type used, whether it was twenty percent sulfur hexafluoride or fourteen percent perfluoropropane, as well as the underlying surgical indication for the vitrectomy.
