Chennai:  Department of Plastic surgery at Apollo First Med Hospital, part of the Apollo Hospitals group, will be hosting the eighth biennial meeting 'BRACHIALCON-2019' from March 29 to 31 here.

More than 200 delegates from across the globe would attend the meet.

Tamil Nadu has a distinction of being a state with very high road accident fatalities and many more of them being permanently disabled due to injuries like brachial plexus injuries.

Majority of the patients were young adults either college going students or in the early stages of their career.

These patients also suffer from depression and other psychological problems, Prof R Venkataswami, (Head and Senior Consultant), Apollo First Med Hospitals told reporters here on Thursday.

“There is a lack of awareness regarding brachial plexus injuries and treatment. If the patient is not treated within the golden period of between three months to six months following injury, other secondary procedures will only give to sub-optimal results'', he added.

The brachial plexus is the network of nerves that sends signals from your spinal cord to your shoulder, arm and hand. A brachial plexus injury occurs when these nerves are stretched, compressed, or in the most serious cases, ripped apart or torn away from the spinal cord.
