10 govt-run medical colleges, 2 institutions renamed in Andhra

Vijayawada: The Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department, Andhra Pradesh has recently issued a directive to rename 10 new government medical colleges and two institutions across the state that were previously named after former chief minister Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy as Dr YSR.

These government medical colleges and institutions include phase-1 and 2 located at Vizianagaram, Rajamahendravaram, Eluru, Machilipatnam, Nandyal, Adoni, Pulivendula, Markapur, Paderu and Madanapalle and two institutions, including Cancer Care Centre at Kadapa and Kidney Research Centre and Super Speciality hospital at Palasa.

This comes after the government reviewed the current situation and decided to rename the 10 Medical Colleges previously designated as Government Medical Colleges in the name of Dr Y.S.R. and two institutions with generic names.

Until new names are assigned, the government decided to change Dr YSR Kidney Research Centre & Super Specialty Hospital in Palasa and the Dr YSR Cancer Care Centre in Kadapa to Government General Hospital, Vizinagaram, and Government General Hospital, Rajahmundry temporarily.

A Government Order (GO) issued by Health Special Chief Secretary M.T. Krishna Babu in this regard mentioned "the Director of Medical Education, A.P., Vijayawada has reported that the Government has established several medical colleges in the name of Dr Y.S.R such as Government Medical Colleges (Phase-I) at Vizianagaram, Rajamahendravaram, Eluru, Machilipatnam, Nandyal and Government Medical Colleges (Phase-II) at Adoni, Pulivendula, Markapur, Paderu, Madanapalle and institutions of Dr YSR Kidney Research Centre & Super Specialty Hospital, Palasa and Dr YSR Cancer Care Centre, Kadapa. The Director of Medical Education, A.P., has, therefore, sought the orders of the Government in the matter.

The Government have reviewed the matter and decided to change the names of the above Govt. Medical Colleges and institutions of Dr YSR Kidney Research Centre & Super Specialty Hospital, Palasa and Dr YSR Cancer Care Centre, Kadapa and to give generic names like Govt. General Hospital, Vizinagaram, Govt. General Hospital, Rajahmundry, till a new name is decided."

Further it added, "Accordingly, the Government hereby order to change the names of the 10 Medical Colleges (Phase - I and Phase -II colleges) whose names were changed in the G.O., 3rd read above as Government Medical Colleges and also hereby change the names of the two (02) institutions whose names were changed/established with name in the G.O. 1st and 2nd read above as Cancer Care Centre at Kadapa, YSR Kadapa District and Kidney Research Center and Super-specialty Hospital, Palasa, Srikakulam District, till a new name is decided."

Following this, the Director of Medical Education, Vijayawada, has been instructed to implement the necessary changes as per the government’s new order.
