Lakhimpur medical college MBBS student arrested over sexual assault attempt

Assam: A third-year MBBS student of Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital has been arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault his classmate inside the college premises, triggering shock and outrage on campus.

The accused was taken into custody on Wednesday after the student filed a complaint detailing the incident.

According to police, the student allegedly followed the student into the women’s toilet, forcibly entered, locked the door from inside, and attempted to assault her. The girl managed to escape and immediately informed her family, following which an FIR was lodged at Lilabari police station, leading to his swift arrest.

According to the Assam Tribune news report, police informed that the accused student forcibly entered the toilet, locked the door from inside, and attempted to sexually assault the fellow student. The girl managed to escape and alerted her family. Following the incident, the victim's family immediately filed an FIR at the Lilabari police station, following which the accused was promptly arrested.

“We have arrested the accused, who is a third-year MBBS student at LMCH. Based on the complaint filed by the victim’s family, we have initiated interrogation,” the police official informed Hub Network. 

Speaking to GPlus, an official from Lakhimpur Police said, “After the victim’s statement was filed for attempted rape, we arrested the student on the same day. He is in police custody right now.” Lakhimpur Police also noted that the student will be produced before the court as part of the next step in the investigation.

Earlier this year, Medical Dialogues had reported that, demanding better medical facilities and specialist doctors, activists from the Asomiya Yuva Manch (AYM) staged a protest on Saturday in front of Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital (LMCH). The protesters carried banners and shouted slogans against the Assam government, blaming it for failing to improve the hospital's condition and its medical infrastructure.
