New Delhi: With the Medical council of India, giving its nod to tele-consultation by doctors and also issuing telemedicine practice guidelines, AIIMS who recently had closed doors on its OPD registrations is going to resort to this measure

The AIIMS will soon begin a tele-consultation facility for its patients as it has shut down its OPD, including speciality services, and all new and follow-up patients' registration from March 24 till further orders.

The facility is likely to be operational by the end of this week.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi on March 21 decided to temporarily close routine walk-in OPD's patients registrations from March 23 in backdrop of the coronavirus.

Besides this the AIIMS decided to postpone all non-essential elective procedures and surgeries for now as a major part of its manpower and resources have been diverted in fighting coronavirus threat. The hospital will, however, continue to do emergency life-saving surgeries.

"The aim of starting a tele-consultation facility is to help our follow-up patients get consultation of doctors through telephone. Several patients had appointments which are now cancelled. Besides, chronic patients can also consult doctors through this system," AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria said.
