Vadodara: A day after the Congress party filed a complaint with the district election officer regarding the use of the prefix "Dr" in the campaign materials of the BJP's Lok Sabha candidate Hemang Joshi, a group of physiotherapists held a protest, claiming that the objection was an insult to their profession.

The doctor demanded a public apology from the contesting party members who opposed the use of the Dr prefix. Dr Joshi is the youngest candidate in Gujarat from Vadodara. He has a postgraduate degree in Human Resource Management from Maharaj Sayjirao University in 2016. He pursued a Bachelor in Physiotherapy degree from the Maharaja Sayjirao University Varoda in 2015.

Congress argued that Joshi should not use the prefix 'Dr' according to Indian Medical Council (IMC) rules. In response, approximately 150 physiotherapists, organized under the banner of 'physiotherapy sangathan,' marched in a rally and submitted a memorandum at the district collectorate. They contended that Congress leaders had not properly understood the IMA rules, reports Times of India.

The physiotherapists noted that Congress referenced an outdated IMA white paper that even the IMA does not currently accept. They emphasized that their council received government recognition during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure as chief minister. The group demanded a public apology from Congress for their objection to Joshi's use of the title 'Dr.'

“They are so ignorant that they don’t even know that Gujarat is the first state in the country where a government-recognized physiotherapy council exists since 2011. Accordingly, we are issued licenses and permitted to mention ‘Dr’ as the prefix,” said Dr Gunjan Kakadiya. The protesting doctors pointed out that Congress was referring to a document issued by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) but even the IMA does not recognize the document now. “When PM Narendra Modi was chief minister, our council had got government recognition,” he said.
