Beefed with medicos, man steals laptop from Kannur medical college hostel to exact old revenge, held

Kannur: A man hailing from Tamil Nadu, who had a bone to pick with medicos was arrested once again for stealing the laptop of a PG medical student in Kannur medical college hostel.

The accused, a 25-year old man had earlier avenged the cyberbullying of his girlfriend by some medical students in Chennai, who had allegedly recorded an objectionable video of the girl and made it viral. The man had stolen at least 500 laptops from several medical college hostels across the country since 2015 to take revenge on them. He soon started stealing laptops of medical students to mentally harass them and developed this as a habit.

This time the accused travelled to Kannur via train on May 28 and broke into the hostel room on the eighth floor. He stole the laptop the Rs 40,000 which belonged to a medical PG student. The medico was not in her room as she was visiting her parents when the robbery took place, reports Mathrubhumi.

When the medico reported the robbery, the police started investigating by going through the CCTV visuals and they spotted the man stealing the laptop and leaving the hostel. Cops with the help of Cyber Cell launched a search to trace him. All the 40 passengers who reached Kannur railway station on May 28 were contacted by police. Among them, 39 people answered the call but the accused's number was switched off.
Thereafter, police checked his CDR and other details. He used to dress like an executive and was careful to never leave any clue. However, this time the man was picked up from Salem based on the complaint of a PG medical student of the hospital.
During interrogation, the accused told the police that he had stolen hundreds of laptops of medical students in various states. According to the police, he stole the laptops of over 500 medical students within 6 years. "As per his statement, he and his lover had an issue with some medical students in his home state in 2015. Some in the medical fraternity had allegedly misbehaved with his girlfriend and since then Selvam had been targetting medical students. That's what he claimed," a police official told PTI.
It is said that his aim was to cause mental agony to the medicos by stealing their valuables and selling them. The accused confessed that he had landed in police custody in other states as well in connection with the theft.
"We are not sure whether his claims are true. We have to verify things first. We expect more details to be revealed when he gets him in our custody," the official added.
The accused was arrested on Sunday and produced before a local court which remanded and sent him to jail.
