Mumbai: The suspended deputy dean of Sion Hospital has once again come under police radar for MBBS admission fraud after he allegedly duped a Dharavi-based doctor of Rs 70 lakh four years ago, promising an MBBS seat under the management quota at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital.

This is the 6th time that the suspended doctor, has been booked in a cheating and fraud case. Along with him, three of his associates, including a doctor, have also been booked in connection with the case.

As per a latest report by HT, the incident dates back to September 2020, when the complainant doctor was seeking admission for his daughter, who had scored 60% in Higher Secondary and wanted to pursue MBBS. Despite approaching several colleges, including Lokmanya Tilak Medical College, DY Patil Hospital, JJ Hospital, and Vedanta College under the management quota, he was unable to secure a seat.

At that time, he met with the accused, the then deputy dean of the college, who promised him admission for his daughter at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital under the management quota. For this, he asked the accused to meet his accomplice, another doctor.

"Dr *** called Dr *** and demanded ₹1 crore for the admission, and directed him to meet his associate in Belapur. After negotiations, Dr *** paid ** (associate) ₹70 lakh in three cheques," said the police officer.

Following the payment, the aspirant received a provisional allotment letter and even an official-looking email from the college for online classes. For four months in 2021, she attended the online lectures but was not satisfied with the teaching quality. She could only hear the audio as the video was always turned off, so she never saw her teacher.

When the doctor complained to Dr Mohan Joshi, the dean, about the quality of online classes, he was told that the college never admitted his daughter.

Shocked, the complainant doctor contacted one of the accused and asked when his cheques were deposited, but received no answers. He then approached the police and filed a complaint.

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against the suspended deputy dean, another doctor, the concerned associate, and another accomplice, under Sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. An investigation is underway in this regard.
