Sion Hospital Deputy Dean, 2 others booked for allegedly duping medical student of Rs 21 lakh for PG Seat
Mumbai: A case of cheating has been registered against the suspended deputy dean of Lokmanya Tilak Hospital, Rakesh Verma and two others by the Sion police for allegedly cheating a medical student of around Rs 21 lakh from Kolhapur, after promising him a seat at the post-graduation course (MD) in Sion hospital.
The police booked Dr Rakesh Verma, Aditya Kumar alias Anand Sharma and Dheeraj Tiwari for cheating on Saturday, reports the Times of India.
This is not the first cheating case where Dr Verma was involved as the police had busted a medical seat racket back in 2021 where Verma and his aides allegedly duped students on the pretext of getting them admitted to post-graduation at Sion Medical College. The Surat police arrested Verma later in a similar cheating case.
In the current case, Dr Abu Taher Takildar, a resident of Kolhapur alleged that he received a call in 2020 from a person called 'Dr Anand Sharma' promising him admission. Sharma told him that he could help him get admission to the government quota and a seat was available at Sion hospital. But the caller told him that he would have to work as a resident doctor at Sion hospital.
Dr Abu met Sharma and Dr Verma at Sion hospital with Dheeraj on August 2, 2020. Sharma demanded Rs 60 lakh in cash from Dr Abu in return for the postgraduate admission. Abu reportedly paid Rs 20 lakh to Sharma and Tiwari when they met at the Sion hospital along with Rs 1 lakh as hostel fees, said the police.
However, weeks passed and nothing happened following which Dr Abu question them which they evaded until Dr Verma was arrested in 2021 in a similar cheating case, said the officer.
The doctor then went to the police station and said that he was cheated of Rs 21 lakh, reports TOI. He alleged that the accused later gave him a cheque of Rs 4 lakh and promised to pay Rs 17 lakh which has still not been paid.
