Karnataka: Doctor duped of Rs 1.16 crore on pretext of MBBS admission for son in M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, 5 accused held
Bengaluru: A gang which had allegedly duped a Kalaburagi-based doctor of Rs 1.16 crore on the pretext of an MBBS seat for his son were caught and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) recently arrested five members of the gang.
The arrested people have been identified as Nagaraj Siddanna Boruti, 36, Mallikarjuna Vali, 38, Madhushekhar, 28, Hameed, 31, and Basavaraj, 35, reports The Hindu.
The mastermind of the crime, Nagaraj was known to the doctor. The police said that Nagaraj had promised the doctor's son admission to M.S. Ramaiah Medical College in Bengaluru, and he asked for Rs 1.75 lakh as an admission fee from the doctor which the doctor gave.
The doctor also gave Nagaraj Rs 60 lakh which he claimed to be the capitation fee and bribe. The doctor realised that he was cheated when the doctor's son reached the college and got to know he had not secured admission to the college. His son then returned home.
The doctor then followed up with Nagaraj and asked him to return the money, after which he went to the city to collect the money. Nagaraj put him in a lodge at the Majestic area and told the doctor that he would return with the money, said the police. However, a woman then knocked on the doctor's room and entered it after he opened it. Following that, a policeman entered the room, took their photographs, robbed him of valuables, and took the woman away. They asked the doctor to contact them.
Nagaraj then appeared before the doctor and demanded Rs 50 lakh, threatening a police case against him for prostitution if he did not pay up, the police said. When the doctor responded that he did not have that much money in cash, the accused allegedly sent his men to the native village of the doctor who then collected property documents from the family members. The gang pledged the property papers at a cooperative bank, securing a loan of Rs 50 lakhs, reports the Hindu.
According to the police investigation, Nagaraj sent his associates impersonating policemen to perform the raid on the lodge. The police have subsequently recovered 25 grams of gold ornaments, Rs 26 lakh in cash, and a set of walkie-talkies that the accused had used to pose as policemen.
