Pune: A probe has been launched by Pune police into six separate case of MBBS seat fraud by two men who duped medical aspirants of almost Rs 1.13 crores by promising to secure medical admission through management quota.
All the cases are being probed to establish if the the victims were cheated in the same way. An FIR has been lodged at Pune's Chatushrungi police station. Police have booked the two culprits for criminal breach of trust and cheating under the relevant sections of IPC.
As per a recent media report by The Indian Express, six such complaints of fraud have been lodged in the police station by the parents who are residents of Pune, Panvel, and Kolhapur. According to the police, in all 6 cases, the complainants accused two people of cheating them on the pretext of arranging medical admission for their children. The culprits were operating from an office in the Baner Road area.
The complainants alleged that between September and December last year the men approached a number of parents and cheated them by promising their children medical seats under the management quota. The suspects allegedly took the medical aspirants into confidence by stating that they have contacts in various medical colleges in Maharashtra and then secured money from them.
Each complainant paid from Rs 10 lakh to 50 lakh for their medical admission. The culprits collected almost 1.13 crores by cheating the gullible parents of the medical aspirants. However, when some of the parents apprehended fraud and started approaching the police, the accused reportedly escaped with the money and switched off their phones.
Commenting on the case, an officer from the police station told TIE, "The preliminary probe into these six complaints revealed they were cheated by the same two persons. Their phone numbers were switched off. We have reasons to believe they had given their real names. We are working on some clues to track them down. We will probe how they got the information and if they have cheated more people in the same manner."
