Pune: An on-duty doctor attached to the sub-district Hospital in Manchar was allegedly abused, slapped, and assaulted by a group of four men, who resorted to violence following the death of a COVID-19 patient.

The accused, who is a 44-year-old resident of Kalam Village has been arrested by the rural police, while three others have been booked under the charges of assaulting an on-duty doctor and are still absconding.

Narrating the ordeal, Ambadas Deomane, the medical superintendent of the hospital informed that the 65-year old patient was rushed to the hospital on September 27 when her condition was already critical as her blood oxygen saturation level was only 67%.

Dr. Deomane further told Times of India
that " We had to put her on a ventilator and during treatment, we found that the patient had a high level of sugar and liver problems. On October 2nd night she succumbed to the contagion. As per protocol, one of our doctors Mahesh Gude called and informed the son about the patient's demise."

However, the kin of the patient did not handle the news well and started hurling abuses on the doctor over the phone but the doctors did not take it seriously as they thought that he was just shocked and frustrated at the sudden demise of the patient.

As per Deomane "at around 10:30 p.m. he reached the hospital with three others in violation of the entry restrictions and starting slapping and beating the doctor. Some of the COVID-19 patients tried to pacify the son and his three accomplices but they even pushed them. A sequence of events has been recorded in CCTV camera footage and we have given it to the police."
Police have already arrested the son of the deceased woman and booked three others under Section 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public from a discharge of his duty) of IPC and Sections 4 and 5 of the Maharashtra Medicare Service Institutions (prevention of violence and damage or loss to property).
Sub-inspector Arjun Shinde, the investigating officer stated that "the arrested person, a resident of Kalam around 15 km from Manchar, is a farmer and he said the doctor did not take care of his mother and so he assaulted him. His accomplices are missing."
