Maha: Dr Mohan R Wani appointed as Director of National Centre for Cell Science
Pune: Renowned scientist, Dr Mohan R Wani has taken charge as the new director of the Pune-based National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS). Last year he was elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India).
The National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), an autonomous organisation aided by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, was established to facilitate cell biology research in the country.
As an NCCS Pune fellow, Dr Mohan has been working relentlessly to contribute more in the areas of cell and cancer biology, infectious diseases and immunology, stem cell and regenerative medicine, structural biology, and bioinformatics. His areas of interest included Pathogenesis and Cellular Response, Cell Organization and Function, and Stem Cells and Regeneration.
Bone and autoimmune disorders like osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis are also among the areas in which Dr Wani has made a substantial contribution. According to Dr Wani, NCCS will continue to tackle issues relating to basic and translational research through a multidisciplinary approach, as well as national and international collaborations, in order to better understand human health and diseases.
Dr Wani completed his post-graduation in Veterinary Surgery from Nagpur Veterinary College and he completed his M.V.Sc. (Surgery) from Post Graduate Institute, PKV, Akola(M.S.). He is a recipient of the Commonwealth Fellowship Award. Thereafter, he pursued his PhD from Human Medicine from St George's Hospital Medical School, University of London, England. He is also a fellow of prestigious science academies like the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), National Academy of Sciences India (NASI), National Academy of Veterinary Sciences (NAVS) and National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), reports The Indian Express.
He has received several prestigious awards of national and international reputation including the BM Birla Science Prize, and the National Bioscience Award. He has also contributed in a number of peer-reviewed international journals, and he has supervised numerous PhD, medical, veterinary, and postdoctoral fellow students.
NCCS is located within the academically-enriched campus of the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). Since its inception, NCCS has been performing cutting-edge research in cell biology, providing valuable services as a national animal cell repository, and supporting human resource development through various teaching and training programmes.
