Mumbai: In a case of fraud, a young IT professional was duped of rupees 14 lakhs after a man introducing himself as a foreign-based doctor connected with her via a matrimonial site and cheated her.

The complainant alleged that the man introduced himself as a doctor of Indian origin and claimed to be working in the United Nations children's fund in Spain. The couple made via a matrimonial site and developed a relationship they decided to marry in India by the end of October.

The victim has been identified as a 30-year-old and a Kalamboli resident who was working as an IT professional. The complainant alleged that the accused called her on September 30th and informed her about his arrival at the Delhi airport; however, he claimed that he has been detained by the customs officials.
Mumbai Mirror reports that the accused told the victim that he needed her help and told her that he needed to pay money to release himself as he has been detained by the customer officials because he was carrying a large amount of foreign currency. The complainant then received a call from a woman as well who posing as a customs official convinced her to deposit almost 14 lakhs in several bank accounts as it was necessary to release the man. One of the police officials confirmed that the man told the victim that he had been detained till October 17th.
The woman in her complaint stated that when the demand for money continued, the victim became suspicious of the whole process. She consulted her friend who told her that she seemed to have been duped. After that, the victim decided to approach the police and a police case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code against the accused and the woman who was his accomplice on Tuesday.
