Mumbai: In a raid conducted by the Mumbai Crime Branch unit and BMC's medical officer, a 46-year-old quack was arrested for operating a clinic for two years without valid medical credentials in the Malvani area of Northern Mumbai. 

The main accused is wanted in a murder case filed at Mulund police station and is named in three other cases. He was practising illegally in a private hospital situated in Mulund.

His wife, who holds a Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery (BUMS) degree was also taken into custody for allegedly storing medications that can only be prescribed by licensed medical professionals and for permitting her husband to treat patients at the clinic.

The Malwani police revealed that the accused doctor, a resident of Bandra, was wanted in a case where a patient had died due to wrong treatment in 2023, reports HT

The accused has medical negligence cases against him across the city, said the police officer, adding that, “The accused was produced before the court on Thursday where he was remanded to police custody.”

“On specific information, Parvez Abdul Aziz Shaikh, who is wanted in connection with a murder case registered in Mulund and was running Aziz Poly Clinic in Malvani area, was held in a raid carried out by the Crime Branch and BMC’s medical officer on Wednesday. He used to administer saline and other medicines in vials to patients,” he said.

The official informed, “He has no degrees nor is he registered with Maharashtra Medical Council. He and his wife were taken into custody and handed over to Malvani police for further action. Shaikh was arrested while his wife was allowed to leave after being served a notice,” news agency PTI reported.

He is wanted in a murder case filed at Mulund police station and is named in three other cases, the official added.

“He was practicing illegally in a private hospital situated in Mulund. He was among 17 doctors who signed death certificates of 149 persons who died at that hospital between February 17, 2018 and November 22, 2018. A case of murder was registered at the time on the order of the court,” he said.

The police arrested the accused under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act and sent a notice to his wife to be present before the police for investigation.
