Manipur- In the recently held Parliament session, the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare informed that there is not proposal for establishment of a new AIIMS in Manipur.

The minister informed that till date, establishment of 22 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been approved in various states/union territories of the country, including Assam.

On 21st March, a Parliament session was held where a question was asked by MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam regarding the establishment of AIIMS in Manipur. In the series of questions of AIIMS institutes, MP sought to know whether there is any proposal or consideration to establish an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Manipur, if so, the details thereof, whether there is any plan to upgrade the Regional Institutes of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal into an AIIMS and if so, the details thereof along with the proposed timeline for implementation.

Responding to queries, the MoS Health informed that under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), "till date establishment of 22 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been approved in various States/UTs in the country including one AIIMS in the north east region at Guwahati (Assam), which is functional. However, in the current phase of PMSSY, there is no proposal for the establishment of a new AIIMS in Manipur. Further, new AIIMS are set up as Institutes of National Importance under the AIIMS Act. All AIIMS are greenfield projects, and there is no provision to upgrade an existing Institute into AIIMS under the Act."

The Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), launched in 2003, has the primary objective of bridging the regional disparities in the availability of affordable and reliable tertiary healthcare services and promoting quality medical education in the country.
