Shillong: The Meghalaya government will sign a revised agreement with the controversial Kali Pradip Chaudhuri (KPC) company which has not been able to build the Shillong Medical College now for almost nine years since 2012, Health and Family Welfare Minster, Alexander Laloo Hek said on Friday.

He said a new agreement has to be signed with the KPC for the setting of the Shillong Medical College since the site for constructing the medical college has been shifted from TB Hospital Mawprem to TB Hospital Umsawli at the New Shillong Township.

Hek also defended the KPC saying the company has no adverse antecedent.

The KPC, reportedly has to deal with some lawsuits in the United States where it was alleges that Dr Kali P Chaudhuri, a controversial doctor turned medical businessman, engaged in a fraud, racketeering and corruption with respect to a number of inter related medical companies.

Hek said that the government had examine the credentials of the company.

He said that the delay to start the construction of the Shillong Medical College was due to the norms of the MCI that a medical college should have a land about 20 acres.

"We have to shift to TB Hospital Umsawli which already has 17 acres and another 5 acres was given by the urban affairs department which will come to 22 acres," Hek said.

He said that a revised agreement with the KPC has to be signed for the construction of the Shillong Medical College.

Hek however could not say as to when the construction of the medical college will begin and time to complete the project.

In fact, the foundation stone for the Shillong Medical College had been laid by former chief minister Mukul Sangma who is now the leader of Opposition after an agreement with the KPC was signed in November, 2012.

Though the KPC is yet to build the medical college, but the firm had already proposed to hike the fee structure from Rs 3.5 lakh for full medical course to Rs 10 lakh, but the state government has not taken a call on this.
