Odisha Cabinet nod to reserve medical Seats For Govt school Students

Bhubaneswar:  In a significant decision the Odisha cabinet on Monday passed a resolution to reserve seats for students of government-run schools in medical and engineering courses in the state.

The cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik decided to constitute a high-level committee under the Chairmanship of a retired High Court Judge to give it a final shape.

Eminent people and educationists would be taken as the members of the committee.

The committee will submit its report to the government within three months and the recommendations of the committee will be implemented from the coming academic year.

The decision to reserve seats in medical and engineering colleges for students of government run schools was taken after their numbers in these courses was reportedly declining following the introduction of entrance examinations like NEET and JEE.

The students could not fare well in the competitive examination as the students in rural areas were deprived of proper coaching facilities which were mostly available in the urban areas.

The government took the decision to reserve seats for government school students to create a sense of self confidence in the minds of the students studying in government run schools and to fulfill their dreams of becoming engineers and doctors.

In another decision the cabinet also approved a proposal to make it mandatory for all people representatives starting from sarpanchs to the chief minister and all employees beginning from entry level officers up to the chief secretary to submit their property statement every year which will be available in the public domain

A copy of the property statement would be sent to the Lokayukta.

This fight against corruption will help to solve many problems like inequality, injustice and poverty in the society.

The cabinet also decided to observe the birth and death anniversaries of all great sons of Odisha and develop their places of birth as ideal villages.

The great sons of Odisha have contributed a lot for the conservation and protection of the art, culture and literature in different phases of history and it is our duty to remember them and apprise them about their life and deeds to the coming generation.

The life and deeds of the great sons of Odisha will be included in the curriculum of the students. The cabinet decided to organise a competition among the students of class 7, 8 and 9 on these subjects and to give awards and annual scholarship to meritorious students.

A committee comprised of eminent persons and educationists would be formed for the purpose.
