Odisha: The Odisha Government has recently announced a 15 per cent MBBS seat reservation for government high school students in medical and engineering colleges.

The student who will complete their secondary and higher secondary education from an Odisha government school will be eligible for availing reserved MBBS seats under the quota. The reservations shall be made on a horizontal basis covering all vertical reservations as well as the unreserved group.

As per a recent media report by The Telegraph, a notification was issued by the skill development and technical education department recently where it has been stated that the government has granted a 15 per cent reservation of seats in medical and engineering colleges of the state for the students who have passed their secondary (class X) examination under the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) of Odisha and also completed their higher secondary (XII) examination under the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) from any Odisha Government's Higher Secondary School or Junior College.
Medical dialogues team had earlier reported that the state government constituted a high-powered committee Justice A.K. Mishra, retired Judge of Odisha High Court to recommend reservation of seats for the students of Government High Schools in the Engineering and Medical courses of the State. The committee presented their recommendations after which finally a notification was issued by the government confirming the reservation under the Odisha government school quota.
The notification further added that the decision was taken by the authorities after considering the disadvantages of government high school students who often fail to compete with their counterparts in private schools while appearing in entrance examinations like the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), reports the daily.
The notification also stated that Government High schools include the schools which are aided by the government of Odisha higher secondary schools and junior colleges of the state as defined in the Odisha Education Act, 1969.
The eligible students will get a reservation in all the medical colleges for medical courses including MBBS and other Medical and paramedical courses. As far as engineering courses as concerned, the students will get reservations for admission in BTech, BE, and BArch courses in engineering colleges. The eligible aspirants will also get the chance to compete under the unreserved seats and in case an adequate number of such eligible students are not available for seats then such vacant seats will be filled by other students of the respective categories, added the notification.
