MBBS admissions at BFUHS delayed after aspirant alleges irregularities in candidature selection
Punjab: The medical admission process of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) is getting delayed as the Director, Medical Education and Research is yet to take a decision on the representation of an MBBS aspirant, who had pointed out some irregularities in the MBBS admission procedure under the state residency quota.
The petitioner alleged that more than 100 medical aspirants have staked a claim on MBBS seats in more than one state and it is against the eligibility criteria for availing Punjab residency for medical admission.
The medical aspirant stated that the rules framed by the state relating to the residence category and criteria are not being appropriately followed.
In the representation, it was claimed that there are almost 106 medical aspirants who were included in the admission process under the state category and are most likely to secure MBBS seats; however, these candidates are actually not eligible to gain an MBBS seat under the state quota as they have not followed the residence criteria rules as dictated by the state, reports The Tribune.
According to the eligibility criteria for state residency, one cannot claim MBBS seats in more than one state but these 106 candidates staked a claim on MBBS seats in more than one state, alleged the medical aspirant. When the petitioner did not secure any response from the DMER or the authorities did not take any decision even after almost two weeks, the candidates approached Haryana and Punjab High Court regarding the issue.
On the 16th of December, the High court directed the DMER to examine the representation and to take appropriate action within 2 to 3 days. The court also instructed the concerned authorities to finalize the MBBS admission process only after scrutinizing the representation and the allegations of the petitioner.
BFUHS was supposed to display the result of counselling for MBBS and BDS on December 18th but now the publication of the result is being withheld as DMER's decision regarding the representation is still awaited. However, BFUHS authorities informed the daily that the result will be declared soon.
The authorities claimed that they have already scrutinized the candidates and according to it only 10 candidates out of the total of 106 have availed the benefit of Punjab residency. The authorities also clarified that if at any stage these candidates are found to have violated the norms and regulations as laid down by the state regarding the state residency quota then they will have to face consequences and the authorities will take legal actions against them, reports the Tribune.
Moreover, one of the BFUHS officials told the daily that in case of any misuse of the quota or any violation of the norms, the admission of the concerned medico might also get canceled.
