2300 Plasma Units missing from JK Lon Hospital: Panel suggests debarring firm that runs CCTVs

The committee's investigation pointed towards a lab technician at the hospital, who was previously arrested on charges of stealing plasma from the hospital's blood bank. An audit of the blood bank's records from the past five years led to the discovery of the missing plasma units.

"We have formed a committee to ensure proper functioning of the blood bank. Besides, we have issued directions to keep all the CCTVs functioning in the hospital. Security has also been tightened in the blood bank,” Dr Kailash Meena, medical superintendent of JK Lon Hospital, told Times of India.

According to the committee's report, the 2,300 units of plasma are valued at approximately Rs 14 lakh. The report has suggested that this amount should be recovered from the accused technician. Additionally, the committee found excess plasma units at a private hospital's blood bank, prompting the health department to issue a notice to the private hospital, demanding an explanation for the surplus, reports The Daily. 

The findings have raised serious concerns about the security measures and integrity of the blood bank operations at JK Lon Hospital. It was noted that the CCTV cameras were not functioning properly, undermining the security system in place.

In response to the theft, the hospital administration has initiated measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The health department has announced the establishment of a blood transfusion services unit under the director of public health, aimed at ensuring the smooth and secure operation of blood banks across the state.
