Dr S Balashankar takes charge as Dean GMC Theni after suspension of former dean
Chennai: Pediatrician Dr. S. Balashankar has been appointed as the Dean of the Government Medical College Hospital, Theni, on Saturday. He was previously serving as the Head of the Department of Paediatrics at Government Rajaji Hospital.
The change of guards comes after the suspension of the previous dean after certain bribery allegations. There was an allegation against the dean of the Government Medical College for accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from canteen contractor over the provision of drinking water connections. The secretly recorded video showed the contractor requesting the dean to provide a drinking water supply in the college canteen by offering a hefty amount for him on the table.
He said that he was unable to sleep due to stress since his business was going down. Therefore, he visited the dean with the remaining amount as he can run the business only with the dean’s help. Soon the video went viral on social media.
Following the incident, a problem was carried out and concerned Dean was suspended initially. In his place, following which senior professor Thirunavukkarasu held the position on ad-hoc basis, reports The Hindu.
