Thanjavur: In an unfortunate incident, a fourth-year MBBS student passed away after accidentally drowning in the Arasalaru river while he was taking a bath.

The 21-year-old deceased medico has been identified as a resident of Ammapettai near Kumbakonam, who was pursuing his medical course in China.

According to a recent media report, the medico had to return to India from China in March due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Recently, he went to visit the Arasalaru river on Saturday evening, wanting to take a bath. However, due to a sudden strong wave, he could not maintain his balance in the river. Suddenly, he was swept away by the strong currents and eventually got drowned.

Finding the medico drowning, some of the local people who were also taking bath in the river made several attempts to rescue him but they could not save the medical student.

The fire and the rescue department personals were informed and they rushed to the spot immediately. They conducted a search to find the medico. However, it was already getting dark by then and the officials could not continue with the search operation on Saturday.

The next day the fire and rescue department again reached the spot where the medico allegedly drowned and searched the area after which they retrieved the body of the deceased medico. The body was sent to Kumbakonam government hospital for postmortem, reports TOI.

A case of unnatural death has been registered in Kumbakonam taluk police station and police are investigating the case. At a time like this, when the medical community has been working selflessly to contain the pandemic, the untimely death of a young medico has brought grief into the medical community.
