Trichy: In connection with the death of a nursing student, who had been admitted for a surgical procedure, around 300 nursing students staged a protest on Saturday in front of the government hospital (MGMGH), alleging medical negligence.

A protest erupted in front of the hospital around 7 a.m., during which demonstrators blocked the road. Alleging medical negligence, they claimed that an excessive dose of anaesthesia had been administered and demanded the removal of the anesthesiologist, who was allegedly responsible for their colleague's death, along with others.

Subsequently, HR&CE Minister S. Ramesh, accompanied by Deputy Speaker M. Ravishankar, arrived at the spot and listened to the protesters.

Following this, the State Government soon announced the formation of a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the "adverse medical event" involving the student, which will comprise officials from Madras Medical College and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Health Secretary Derez Ahmed told TOI that the report of the high-level expert team would be submitted within the next five to six days, and further action would be based on it.

The committee is chaired by Dr N Baskar, Medical Superintendent of RGGGH, and includes Dr M Bharathi Mohan, Professor of ENT at MMC and RGGGH; Dr. P. Shanmugasundaram, Professor of Anesthesia; and Dr N Jayaprakash, Professor of Medicine at MMC and RGGGH.

The deceased has been identified as a third-year nursing student at KAPV. On Wednesday, she sought treatment for persistent headaches; subsequent examinations revealed a 'deviated nasal septum' (a crooked nasal bone), which required surgery.

The surgery was scheduled for Friday, but it could not proceed due to a cardiac arrest that occurred while anaesthesia was being administered. Following complications encountered during the administration of anesthesia, the nursing student was shifted to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit and revived. Immediately thereafter, she was placed on ventilator support and an intra-aortic balloon pump.

The post-mortem was conducted in Trichy on Saturday evening in the presence of an expert team, and a case was registered at the GH Police Station.

Meanwhile, several senior politicians and former ministers, including the DMK's Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, the AMMK's TTV Dhinakaran, and the BJP's Nainar Nagendran, condemned the incident and demanded a thorough investigation into it.
