12 New Medical Colleges likely to come up in Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh- Soon, Uttar Pradesh will likely get 12 new medical colleges with over 10,000 MBBS seats. With this, the total number of colleges in UP will increase from 68 to more than 80.
Currently, the National Medical Commission (NMC) is processing applications for setting up new medical colleges in the country and increasing MBBS seats. The process includes applications from Uttar Pradesh to start 12 new medical colleges in the Kushinagar, Pilibhit, Sultanpur, Bijnor, Bulandshahr, Lakhimpur Kheri, Kaushambi, Gonda, Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, Sonbhadra and Chandauli districts as well as 100 new medical colleges in other states.
Some of the new colleges have already been attached to existing district hospitals while others are being provided with both academic and clinical infrastructure.
Currently, there are a total of 68 medical colleges in the state with over 9,700 MBBS seats. The establishment of 12 medical colleges in UP will help bring the state in league with other states namely Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Maharashtra. According to the data, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have more than 11,000 MBBS seats each, Maharashtra has 10,745 seats, followed by Telangana with 8,540 seats.
He further added, “We hope we will get through the inspection and the state will get more MBBS colleges”.
Meanwhile, the UP government is planning to set up at least one medical college in every district taking the total number of medical colleges to more than 75 as some districts already have more than one medical college.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that recently NMC MARB received 112 applications for setting up new medical colleges and 58 applications for increasing MBBS seats in existing medical colleges.
Later, clarifying that no new medical college or MBBS and postgraduate medical seats have been approved/sanctioned yet, the NMC issued a warning against misleading and baseless news in print/electronic media regarding the establishment of new medical colleges and grant of UG/PG seats in various medical colleges.
