Meanwhile, investigators have spoken to classmates and hostel residents as part of the investigation. Police are also looking into reports that the student had failed a subject in recent semester exams and was under mental stress, reports PTI

After the incident, the family of the deceased has been informed, and they have reached Durgapur

Last year, Medical Dialogues had reported that a third-year medical student at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Maharashtra's Gondia district reportedly attempted suicide after allegedly being reprimanded by the head of his department over conduct and attendance issues.  The student reportedly tried to hang himself from a ceiling fan at his rented accommodation. He was rescued in time by friends, who broke open the door after being alerted by a distressing WhatsApp post he had shared shortly before the attempt.

A hospital official informed, "A medical student attempted suicide after he was allegedly reprimanded for his conduct by a doctor at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The GMCH has formed a committee to probe into the incident, which took place."
