Jalpaiguri Medical College introduces biopsy testing facility

According to medical college sources, as a part of a standard surgical procedure, when patients have to undergo surgery at the hospital, doctors often recommend tissue biopsy of the affected area. A tissue biopsy is a medical procedure that involves taking a small sample of tissue from the body for examination under a microscope or other tests. The sample can be taken from almost anywhere on or in the body, including the skin, organs, and other structures.

Initially, the testing will be carried out manually, but plans are underway to incorporate automatic machines in the future. This free-of-charge service is expected to provide substantial financial relief for patients and their families. Previously, patients undergoing surgery at the hospital faced additional costs due to the need to send tissue samples to Siliguri for biopsy analysis, reports the Daily. However, with the initiation of biopsy testing at the Jalpaiguri Medical College pathology laboratory, these extra expenses will be eliminated.

Kalyan Khan, MSVP (Medical Superintendent and Vice-Principal) of Jalpaiguri Medical College Hospital, told Millennium Post, “The introduction of this testing service in the Pathology department marks a significant advancement for the medical college, benefitting both patients and their families.” 

The Pathology department comprises a team of six doctors, including three faculty members, two specialist doctors, and one senior resident doctor. Additionally, two technicians have been appointed to assist with the process. Dr. Nirmal Kumar Bhattacharya, Associate Professor of the Pathology department, highlighted the significance of introducing biopsy testing not only for patient care but also for medical education.

On the first day of testing, multiple tissue samples were submitted for biopsy analysis. While the manual testing process may initially lead to some delays in reporting, the future introduction of automatic machines will streamline the process, enabling faster and more efficient diagnosis. Jalpaiguri Government Medical College is a major medical facility that provides healthcare to the northern part of West Bengal.
