On Friday, 6th August, police arrested one Sharma for allegedly conning a Delhi resident by promising to secure an MBBS seat for his son for 24 lakhs. According to the complainant, who is a resident of Rajouri, Delhi, Sharma had not only promised to get his son admitted into a medical college but had also claimed that he would be awarded the degree irrespective of his performance throughout college. Sharma demanded a lofty sum of Rs. 1,50,00,000 from the victim. He claimed that the money included the course fee along with a 'donation' amount.

According to the police, "The victim paid Sharma Rs 24 lakh in installments. He, however, could not secure a seat for his son. After a few months, Sharma switched off his cellphone and stopped all communication with him. It was then he realised that he had been duped and lodged a police complaint."

The victim gave the number from which the fraudster used to call, to the Delhi police, who then placed it on surveillance. "We placed the number under surveillance but it was switched off for the past few months. A few days back when it was switched on, we zeroed in on this location here," an officer informed the Telegraph.

The Delhi police collaborated with the Bidhannagar Commissionerate for the arrest. Sharma was picked up by the cops on Friday, from his rented accommodation.

He was produced before Salt lake court and is being taken to Delhi on remand.

NEET 2021 is scheduled to be conducted on September 12th and more than 15 lakh applicants are expected to register for the same.
