Sexual harassment allegations at NRS Ayurvedic College under investigation
Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission has initiated a detailed investigation into allegations of sexual harassment involving female students at Nori Rama Sastry Government Ayurvedic College, following a complaint received via email. The matter has raised serious concerns regarding student safety and institutional accountability.
Commission Chairperson Dr. Rayapati Sailaja carried out a surprise inspection of the college on Wednesday as part of the inquiry, reports NewsMeter. During her visit, she held separate and confidential interactions with both students and faculty members in order to gather first-hand information and better understand the nature of the allegations.
According to the Commission, the complaint indicated that a previous internal inquiry conducted by the college authorities was inadequate and lacked fairness. It further alleged that students who attempted to raise their concerns were subjected to pressure and intimidation, including warnings of possible negative consequences in their academic evaluations. The identity of the complainant, however, remains undisclosed.

The Commission also pointed out procedural lapses on the part of the institution. It noted that there was a significant delay in constituting the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), which was reportedly formed more than a month after the complaint was received. Additionally, the absence of mandatory external members in the committee raised questions about the credibility and transparency of the investigation conducted by the college.
Although the college’s preliminary report dismissed the allegations, the Commission observed several inconsistencies in its findings. During the fresh inquiry, some students reportedly acknowledged that the incidents had occurred but admitted that they had initially remained silent due to fear of academic repercussions and possible victimization.
The inspection was conducted in the absence of the college principal, who was on leave at the time. The Commission has taken a serious view of the matter and stated that further action will be based on the outcome of its ongoing investigation.
Dr. Sailaja emphasized that ensuring a safe, secure, and supportive academic environment is essential for students to pursue their education without fear.
