Doctor alleges harassment on AMU campus; two students arrested

Aligarh: In a shocking incident, a doctor who visited the campus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has alleged that he was threatened and harassed by a group of youths, leading to the arrest of two students and a police investigation.

According to news reports, the incident occurred on April 14 when the 25-year-old doctor, a resident of Amroha district, visited the university campus to meet a female acquaintance. After completing his visit, he left the premises in an e-rickshaw but was allegedly stopped near the campus by a group of young men.

In his complaint, the doctor stated that he was initially confronted by four youths who allegedly started misbehaving with him. The situation escalated quickly as more people gathered at the scene, forming a crowd of around 30 individuals who surrounded him.

The doctor said the group abused him and made serious threats. They told him that AMU is a “Mini Pakistan” and warned that he would be “slaughtered and buried there.” He was also told that his family would not be able to find him and that he would face severe consequences. During the confrontation, one of the youths claimed to be a second-year MTech student. The group also recorded a video of the incident while continuing the intimidation. The doctor further said he was repeatedly told that the campus is dominated by one community, reports OpIndia.

Fearing for his safety, the doctor immediately dialled the 112 emergency helpline for help. Before police arrived, the AMU proctorial team intervened and escorted him to the proctor’s office, where he was kept safe. His phone was reportedly held temporarily during questioning.

Following the complaint, local authorities initiated an investigation, including reviewing CCTV footage from the area. Based on this evidence, two students were identified as suspects: an MTech student from Ghazipur and a BTech student from Bareilly.

Both individuals were detained from Suleman Hall on April 19 and subsequently sent to judicial custody after questioning.

AMU proctor prof Mohammed Naved Khan said, “Two students of AMU are currently in police custody. We’ll summon them and seek a formal explanation once they get bail. Based on their response, we’ll decide our future course of action in this matter,” reports TOI.

Speaking to OpIndia, SP City Aditya Bansal confirmed the arrests and said the action was taken after proper verification and coordination with the university’s proctorial team. He added that further investigation is underway to track down the remaining suspects involved in the incident.
