AI in Healthcare: From Power to Responsibility

A Change Unlike Any Other

I have spent more than four decades in medicine. I have seen the transition from clinical intuition to evidence-based protocols… from handwritten notes to digital records… from limited diagnostics to technologies that can visualize the human body with astonishing precision.

Each advancement changed how we practiced. Each one improved patient care. But what we are witnessing today is different. Artificial Intelligence is not just another advancement. It is a leap—perhaps the most powerful and most influential transformation in the history of medicine.

“For the first time, intelligence is no longer exclusively human.”

From Tool to Participant

In the past, every technology remained a tool. It extended our capability—but never influenced our thinking. AI is beginning to change that. It learns. It predicts. It suggests. And increasingly, it influences decisions. This marks a subtle but profound shift—from tool to participant.

“When tools begin to think, responsibility must become sharper.”

Beyond Intelligence: The Question of Control

Recent global concerns, including those voiced by pioneers like Geoffrey Hinton, are not about usefulness—they are about control. The issue is not whether AI will become powerful. The issue is whether we will remain in control of that power. In medicine, this question becomes even more critical. Because medicine is not just about decisions. It is about accountability. A machine can suggest a diagnosis, but it cannot carry responsibility. That responsibility will always remain with the doctor.

“AI can support decisions—but it cannot own consequences.”

The Real Risk: Misaligned Direction

The real concern is not intelligence itself. The real concern is—who defines its direction. If AI evolves primarily under the pressure of speed and profit, then ethics and safety may follow behind, instead of leading. In healthcare, this imbalance can have serious implications.

“Technology without ethics is acceleration without direction.”

The Silent Shift: From Thinking to Dependence

There is another risk—less visible, but equally important. Dependence. Not sudden. Not dramatic. But gradual. As AI systems become more efficient and persuasive, there is a possibility that questioning may reduce. Not because doctors are less capable—but because systems appear more certain. Medicine, however, has always progressed through doubt, reflection, and questioning.“When questioning reduces, thinking weakens.”

The Opportunity We Cannot Ignore

Despite these concerns, AI is also an extraordinary opportunity.

It can:

  • Reduce diagnostic errors
  • Improve clinical efficiency
  • Expand access to quality healthcare
  • Support decision-making in complex cases

It has the potential to bring healthcare closer to those who have long been beyond its reach. “The same force that disrupts can also heal—if guided well.” The Role of Doctors: From Users to Leaders. The question is no longer whether doctors should use AI. The question is whether doctors will lead its use. Healthcare cannot afford to be a passive adopter. It must become an active architect.

Doctors must:

  • Understand AI
  • Question its outputs
  • Define its ethical boundaries
  • Ensure patient-centric application

“If doctors do not lead AI, someone else will—and patients may not benefit.”

Health AI Con 2026: A Call for Ownership

This is the spirit behind Health AI Con 2026. It is not just a platform to showcase technology. It is an effort to bring the medical community together—to understand, to question, and to take ownership of this transformation. The National AI Doctors Mission (NAIDM) carries this vision forward to ensure that AI in India remains:

  • Doctor-led
  • Patient-centered
  • Ethically grounded

“This is not adoption. This is ownership of the future of medicine.”

AI as Energy: To Be Contained, Not Feared

Every powerful force in history has required direction. Fire, when uncontrolled, destroys. But when contained, it becomes energy—useful and transformative. AI today is that fire. It is expanding rapidly—perhaps faster than our systems, policies, and preparedness. Our role is not to fear it. Our role is to contain it, channel it, and convert this expanding force into meaningful, responsible energy.

“AI is not a threat to be stopped—but a force to be shaped.”

Conclusion: The Responsibility of This Moment

We are at a turning point. Not just in technology, but in responsibility. AI will redefine how we practice medicine. But it must never redefine why we practice it. Because at the center of healthcare—beyond all intelligence—there must always remain:

  • Human judgment
  • Human values
  • Human responsibility

“AI will redefine medicine. But it must never redefine humanity.”

As AI continues to reshape medicine, initiatives such as the National AI Doctors Mission (NAIDM) offer an opportunity for clinicians to take ownership of this transformation—register now and be part of India’s evolving healthcare landscape: https://medicaldialogues.in/events/health-ai-con/registration-offer-50
