Bengaluru: Oncology Surgeon arrested under running over pedestrian in drunken state
Bengaluru: A city-based oncology surgeon has been arrested for running over a 17-year-old pedestrian while driving his car speedily in a drunken state. The boy reportedly died on the spot.
The incident occurred near Domlur flyover around 12.30 am on 20th August. The accused Dr Teja (30), an oncology surgeon at a prominent hospital in the city, was on his way home after partying, where he consumed alcohol, according to the police. Kevin, the deceased was crossing the road, when the doctor’s speeding car knocked him down.
In the impact of the crash, Kevin was tossed up in the air, crashed on the car’s bonnet and was dragged for a few meters before he died, the police informed TOI.
The doctor immediately pulled over his car to the side and checked on the victim and gave CPR, after which he took him in his car to Manipal Hospital, where the boy was unfortunately declared brought dead, reports Deccan Herald.
Dr Teja told the police, “When I got down to check on him, the boy was breathing. I did not flee from the spot… I tried to save him. I put him in my car and drove to the hospital. He succumbed later.”
Meanwhile, Kevin’s friends who were present during the incident informed the police. After reaching the Hospital, the Halasuru traffic police questioned Dr Teja. He was immediately taken for a blood alcohol test which confirmed he was indeed drunk, much above permissible limits.
Later, Dr Teja confessed to the police that he was over-speeding and was inebriated. Subsequently, the doctor was arrested under IPC section 304 along with rash driving. He was then produced before a magistrate and was remanded in judicial custody.
“Teja has been remanded to judicial custody. The car was seized. The front is damaged and the number plate is broken due to the impact. His driving license was seized and will be sent to RTO with a request for cancellation,” an investigating officer informed Bangalore Mirror.
