Ahmedabad Hospital redevelopment stalled amid Temple Relocation Dispute
Days after a video showing Ahmedabad Civil Hospital’s superintendent taking part in a temple ritual to seek divine approval for relocating a shrine went viral, the hospital’s Rs 588-crore redevelopment project remains stalled, caught in a standoff between infrastructure development and religious sentiments.
The video, which went viral, showed Dr. Rakesh Joshi performing a puja at the Khodiyar Mata temple inside the hospital campus, sparking widespread debate both on social media and in the public sphere.
In response, Dr. Joshi clarified that his visit was a diplomatic gesture aimed at engaging with temple representatives and working toward a mutually agreeable solution regarding the proposed relocation.
At the centre of the controversy is a small shrine dedicated to Khodiyar Mata, located within the sprawling 108-acre Medicity campus in Ahmedabad. The temple stands on land marked for demolition under a redevelopment plan launched on May 27 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The project aims to build a modern 1,800-bed hospital block with expanded ICU and OPD capacity.

BMC’s Recruitment of 700 Faculty Posts Hits Roadblock
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) proposal seeking general approval for all future appointments for professors in its four medical colleges has encountered hurdles from the state government's legal department.
Although the urban development department has approved the civic body’s plan to recruit over 700 teaching staff, the advertisement for the recruitment drive is still pending due to unresolved legal concerns.
Currently, the BMC-run medical colleges have a sanctioned strength of around 829 teaching staff, including professors, assistant professors, and lecturers, many of whom also serve as doctors at affiliated teaching hospitals. Out of these, only about 200 are permanent employees, while around 350 are serving on contractual terms. The remaining posts remain unfilled, leading to increased pressure and workload on the current faculty, reports the Daily.

Pune's Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College faces Shortage of Faculty, Infrastructure Gaps
The Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College continues to struggle with a severe shortage of faculty and teaching staff, coupled with inadequate infrastructure and patient footfall at its affiliated Kamla Nehru Hospital. These issues are significantly affecting the clinical training and education of medical students enrolled in the institution.
Despite enrolling its first batch of MBBS students four years ago, the hospital still lacks essential facilities such as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and functioning operating theatres (OTs), both of which are critical for patient care and hands-on student learning. Adding to the burden, the hospital also faces a deficiency of nursing and sanitation personnel, while the college itself lacks sufficient laboratory facilities and medical equipment necessary for standard teaching, reports the Daily.
Since January this year, both the National Medical Commission (NMC), India's medical education regulatory authority and the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) have served multiple notices to the institution. These communications questioned the college's compliance with regulatory norms and warned of potential withdrawal of approval and cancellation of affiliation.

Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research addresses Zero MBBS seats in NEET 2025 counselling
After the seat matrix released by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) revealed that zero seats were allotted to the Delhi-based Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR), the college has issued a clarification in this regard.
Issuing a notice on 21.07.2025, the institute clarified that the issue is linked to an ongoing contentious issue between Jamia Hamdard and HIMSR, which is currently sub-judice. It also urged students, parents, and well-wishers to remain calm and avoid speculation.
Further, the institute assured all currently enrolled students that HIMSR continues to be a recognized and accredited medical institute, and there is no impact on the status or functioning of the college.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) officially released the tentative list of medical colleges and MBBS seat matrix for NEET 2025 counselling. According to the notification, altogether 775 medical colleges across 35 States and Union Territories will participate in the undergraduate medical admission process this year.
