Delhi AIIMS Doctors accused of bypassing norms, sending patients to private vendors for brain implants

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to investigate a complaint alleging that the doctors at the institute flouted procurement norms and sent patients to buy brain implants from a private vendor. The Commission has sought an action taken report from the institute within 15 days.

NHRC took cognisance of the issue after receiving a complaint in this regard from the Sahyadri Rights Forum, a non-government entity. The forum accused the AIIMS doctors of violating norms that require institutional procurement from approved vendors at regulated costs.

While these norms are in place to shield patients from the medical suppliers, the doctors at the institute allegedly asked the patients to approach a private vendor, thereby exposing them to additional costs.

The complainant referred to a June 2 news report describing how the AIIMS neuroradiology department doctors provided a private vendor's phone number to the patients or their caregivers and instructed them to directly buy a diverter, a stent-like device that is used to treat blood vessel disorders in the brain.

NMC Flags Severe Faculty Shortfall at Jharkhand GMCs

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has expressed serious concerns over the shortage of faculties in five government medical colleges across Jharkhand.

NMC, the Apex Medical Education Regulatory Body, highlighted the persistent deficiencies in the number of staff in the five GMCs during a video conference recently with the Additional Chief Secretary (Health), Ajay Kumar Singh, and the Principals and Superintendents of these institutes.

The list of GMCs includes MGM Medical College & Hospital (MGMMCH), Jamshedpur, Shahid Nirmal Mahato Medical College (SNMMCH), Dhanbad, Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital (PJMCH), Dumka, Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College (SBMCH), Hazaribagh, and Medinirai Medical College and Hospital (MMCH), Palamu.

Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, Safdarjung Hospital launch DM Nephrology Course

Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VNMC) and Safdarjung Hospital have started the Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in Nephrology training program from the 2025 session. With this, VNMC has become the third medical institute in India; this course was earlier taught only in AIIMS and RML Hospital.

On this, Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Sandeep Bansal confirmed the allocation of three annual seats for DM in Nephrology. He said that all three seats are being secured by candidates who are in the top 10, reports TOI.

Meanwhile, VMMC Principal Dr Geetika Khanna expressed pride in starting the course. She emphasised the need for an additional workforce through postgraduate programmes, citing the substantial number of patients.

Dr Himanshu Verma, head of the nephrology department at Safdarjung Hospital, said that about 6,000-7,000 kidney patients come to the hospital for treatment every month. Due to the increasing number of kidney-related health problems, there is a huge shortage of nephrologists and dialysis specialists in India.

Viral Video Shows Doctor Allegedly Snorting Drugs, Assaulting Woman

A shocking video showing a doctor allegedly consuming drugs during duty hours at a private hospital in Jalandhar has gone viral on social media, prompting immediate action from the Punjab government. Another viral CCTV clip reportedly captures the same doctor allegedly assaulting a woman.

According to media reports, the first video appears to show the doctor using a credit or debit card to crush a white powdery substance and then sniffing it. The video, reportedly filmed secretly by a woman, captures the doctor initially protesting and attempting to stop her from recording. When she refused, he is seen snatching the phone, abruptly ending the recording. In the second viral CCTV footage, the same doctor is allegedly seen slapping a woman in front of bystanders.

These incidents reportedly took place in Dasuya, Hoshiarpur, though the doctor is said to be employed at a private hospital in Jalandhar, as per TrueCoopNews. Following the circulation of both videos, Punjab Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh ordered an immediate investigation into the matter.

Speaking to the media in Jalandhar on Thursday morning, Dr Balbir confirmed that he has directed officials to conduct a thorough inquiry with Civil Surgeon Dr Gurmeet Lal and Rama Mandi police leading the investigation.
