Delhi: Doctor Uses Advanced Metabolic Alteration Techniques Along With IVF to Resolve a Complex Case of Infertility
New Delhi: The past few decades have witnessed the emergence of India as a booming medical tourism hub, with people from all over the globe making a beeline for the trusted IVF clinics in the country. Advanced medical facilities along with the skill and expertise of Indian infertility specialists, all coming at affordable cost, are the main reasons attributed to the growing number of people making it here in hope of chasing the elusive dream of parenthood.
Fiona (name changed), a 29-year-old patient from Nigeria, had lost all her hopes when she read about the reputed IVF clinic called Southend Fertility & IVF in Saket, New Delhi. Her case was a complex one, with a positive diagnosis of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, along the history of one spontaneous conception of monochorionic twins in 2010. Fiona went into premature labor during the seventh month of pregnancy, following which she delivered twins. One of her babies was stillborn, while the other who survives suffers from cerebral palsy.
Following this case, Fiona made repeated attempts at conception and was able to do so spontaneously five times in a row, but unfortunately each of these ended in a miscarriage. Despite suffering from chronic amenorrhea and traumatic recurrent miscarriages, she was very sure that she wanted to bear a healthy baby. For this reason, she had been looking for a specialist who could help her out and her search ended at Southend Fertility & IVF, where she has been treated successfully by Dr. Sonia Malik.
One of the most common causes of infertility in women, PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is characterized by the presence of multiple small cysts in the ovaries. The condition is complex yet treatable, if tackled with the right approach and this is what was done in Fiona's case. The highly skilled specialist team at Southend Fertility & IVF, headed by Dr Sonia Malik evaluated her case and established the exact line of treatment to ensure successful pregnancy for her.
Since the patient showed a positive diagnosis for PCOS along with some other issues, a comprehensive personalized treatment plan was devised for her. Dr Malik worked with her team to identify the exact cause of recurrent miscarriages and recommended metabolic alterations as pre-IVF correction. Besides polycystic ovaries, male factor was found responsible for the cerebral palsy as well as multiple miscarriages.
Finally, IMSI (Intracytoplasmic Morphological Sperm Injection) and PGS (Pre-implantation Genetic Screening) were seen as the feasible treatment alternatives. The patient was subjected to IVF, during which she yielded 17 eggs on ovarian stimulation. The eggs were fertilized to form 8 embryos, out of which only two were deemed fit for transfer after PGS. After a day 5 embryo transfer, Fiona received a positive on her pregnancy test and is now into her third trimester.
According to Dr Sonia Malik, "Customized treatment using advanced techniques such as IMSI and PGS in conjugation with IVF can go a long way in treating the most complex of cases such as this one."
