Denture Tablets Proven Effective Against S. aureus, Support Daily denture Hygiene, finds study

A new study has shown that commonly used denture cleansing tablets—Efferdent, Polident, and Val-clean—exhibit strong bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus in vitro, regardless of the type of denture base material. Researchers tested the antimicrobial efficacy of these products on various removable prosthetic materials and found that all three cleansers significantly reduced S. aureus colonization. The study’s findings reinforce the importance of daily chemical disinfection for maintaining oral hygiene, particularly in elderly or immunocompromised individuals who are more vulnerable to infections associated with poor denture hygiene. S. aureus is known to colonize oral surfaces, including dentures, and can contribute to biofilm formation, oral infections, and even systemic complications in high-risk patients. By confirming the broad-spectrum antibacterial effect of these commercially available cleansing agents, the study supports their role in routine denture care to minimize microbial buildup and potential oral-systemic health risks. Notably, the bactericidal effectiveness remained consistent across different denture materials, suggesting that these tablets can be reliably used in diverse clinical settings. The researchers emphasized the need for patient education on proper denture hygiene practices, including soaking dentures daily in a suitable disinfecting solution, brushing, and regular follow-ups with dental professionals. Given the increasing use of removable prostheses globally, these findings could have important implications for public oral health strategies. The study suggests that denture cleansing tablets are not only effective but also a convenient and accessible option for reducing microbial contamination and improving prosthesis longevity.
