Hyaluronic acid gel matches mineral Trioxide Aggregate in Pulp-Dressing Outcomes at 3 to12 Months: Study

A study published in Journal of Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry evaluated the clinical and radiographic performance of hyaluronic acid gel compared with mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) as pulp-dressing materials in primary teeth. Researchers found that over 3, 6, and 12 months, hyaluronic acid gel demonstrated outcomes comparable to MTA, suggesting it may serve as an effective alternative for vital pulp therapy. The study highlights the potential for hyaluronic acid to provide biocompatible, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-regenerative properties that support pulp healing.
The trial included pediatric patients who required pulp therapy in primary molars. Both groups were monitored for signs of clinical success, including absence of pain, swelling, or sinus tract formation, as well as radiographic indicators such as absence of internal or external resorption, periapical radiolucency, or pathological changes in the supporting bone. At each follow-up interval—3, 6, and 12 months—the rates of clinical and radiographic success were statistically similar between the hyaluronic acid and MTA groups, reinforcing its efficacy as a pulp-dressing agent.
The authors emphasized that hyaluronic acid gel could offer advantages over MTA, including easier handling, shorter setting times, and potentially lower cost, while maintaining comparable clinical performance. These findings are particularly relevant for pediatric dentistry, where biocompatibility, patient comfort, and efficient treatment protocols are crucial. Further research may explore its long-term effects on permanent dentition, as well as its integration with other regenerative endodontic approaches. The study contributes to evidence supporting hyaluronic acid gel as a promising alternative in pulp therapy for primary teeth.
