Astragalus Membranaceus Shows Potential Skin and Anti-Aging Benefits: Review

USA: A review published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology highlights that Astragalus membranaceus, a natural plant-based ingredient commonly used in skincare products, may provide multiple skin benefits. The ingredient appears to support collagen production, antioxidant activity, and skin barrier function, contributing to overall skin health and potential anti-aging effects. Researchers suggest that Astragalus membranaceus may serve as a supportive adjunct to established, evidence-based skincare practices, rather than a standalone treatment.
- The bioactive compounds demonstrated multiple protective effects at the cellular level.
- They were shown to reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS), helping to limit oxidative stress–related skin damage.
- Suppression of pro-inflammatory signaling pathways was observed, indicating potential anti-inflammatory benefits.
- Preservation of mitochondrial function was reported, supporting cellular energy balance and resilience.
- Several studies found increased collagen synthesis, which is essential for maintaining dermal firmness and reducing wrinkle formation.
- Astragaloside IV was linked to telomere elongation under oxidative stress conditions, suggesting a possible role in promoting cellular longevity.
- Clinical studies, although limited, reported improvements in skin hydration among users of formulations containing Astragalus membranaceus extract.
- Participants also experienced more even skin tone and a visible reduction in fine lines.
- The clinical outcomes were consistent with laboratory findings, indicating enhanced skin barrier integrity and strengthened antioxidant defenses.
