Fact Check
The claim by the user is FALSE. Diabetes is a chronic condition that cannot be cured, let alone within 17 hours, as falsely claimed in the video. Upon fact-checking, it was also found that the video is AI-generated and entirely fake, misleading viewers with false medical information.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a long-term condition that arises when the pancreas produces insufficient insulin or when the body cannot use the insulin it produces efficiently. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. Hyperglycemia, or elevated blood sugar, is a common outcome of poorly managed diabetes and, over time, can result in significant damage to various body systems, particularly the nerves and blood vessels.
Can Diabetes Be Cured?
Currently, there is no cure for diabetes or a way to eliminate it entirely but most people can achieve diabetes reversal. This involves effectively managing blood sugar levels to the extent that medication is no longer needed and maintaining that state through a consistent routine of healthy eating and regular exercise.
What are the Nutritional Benefits Of Turmeric?
Turmeric, also known as Haldi, is obtained from rhizomes of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) as a palatable orange-yellow spice and has cur-cumin as the main constituent. Turmeric exhibits anti-inflammatory activity, strong antimicrobial properties, and anticancer activities. In Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric is a well-documented treatment for various respiratory conditions like asthma, bronchial hyperactivity, and allergy, as well as for liver disorders, anorexia, rheumatism, diabetic wounds, runny nose, cough, and sinusitis.
Is the video uploaded by the user on Facebook authentic?
A digitally altered AI-generated video falsely claims that news anchor Rajat Sharma reported Dr. Devi Shetty's endorsement of turmeric as a cure for diabetes within 17 hours.
The Medical Dialogues Fact Check Team also counter-checked the video. The research was conducted using the reverse search image of the frames that were involved in the video. The reverse image search was done using Google Lens.
A reverse image search of a frame from the viral video featuring Dr. Devi Shetty led to the original footage, uploaded on the official YouTube channel of Narayana Health on September 29, 2022. The original clip, recorded for World Heart Day, shows Dr. Shetty, Chairman and Founder of Narayana Health, recommending a CT Angio or heart CT scan every 10 years for individuals over 40. There is no mention of diabetes, confirming that the viral video has been digitally manipulated.
The Medical Dialogues fact-check team also used the Hive AI detector to analyze the video’s audio, which determined that 99.9% of it was AI-generated.
The Medical Dialogues Fact-Check Team upon Fact Check found that the video was artificially generated using AI.
Can Turmeric Cure Diabetes in 17 Hours?
There is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to back the claim that turmeric can cure diabetes in 17 hours. While turmeric has demonstrated some potential in managing diabetes, there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to support its ability to cure diabetes, especially within a short timeframe. Diabetes is a chronic condition that cannot be cured but can only be managed effectively.
Turmeric may offer certain benefits in managing blood glucose levels. A study by N. Maithili Karpaga Selvi et. al. highlighted that turmeric supplementation when used as an adjuvant to metformin treatment in individuals with type 2 diabetes, had a positive impact on blood glucose control, oxidative stress, and inflammation.
Curcumin, a bioactive compound in turmeric, has shown beneficial effects in diabetes management. A study by Ledyane Taynara Marton et. al. indicates that curcumin may aid in controlling diabetes by significantly reducing fasting blood glucose levels, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and body mass index (BMI).
Turmeric has shown some potential benefits for blood sugar regulation but no scientific evidence or medical consensus supports the claim that it can cure diabetes in 17 hours. Managing diabetes requires a combination of medical treatment, lifestyle changes, and ongoing monitoring.
Responding to the claim Dr Aman Rathore, DNB, Critical Care Medicine, Max Super Speciality Hospital said, "The claim that turmeric can cure diabetes in 17 hours is completely false. As a doctor, I want to emphasize that diabetes is a chronic condition that requires careful management—not a quick fix. While turmeric, especially its active compound curcumin, has shown some benefits in reducing inflammation and improving insulin sensitivity, it does not cure diabetes—certainly not within hours.
Managing diabetes effectively involves a balanced approach with proper medication, lifestyle modifications, and a healthy diet, all guided by medical professionals.
Additionally, the video making this claim is AI-generated as we did not see Rajat Sharma or Dr. Devi endorsing such claims. It's important to not engage with such content as it spreads misinformation that can be harmful. Always consult a qualified doctor before making any changes to your diabetes management."
Dr Prem Aggarwal, MD (Medicine), DNB (Cardiology, Director, Sanjeevan Hospital, Daryaganj, Delhi further explained, "The claim that turmeric can cure diabetes in 17 hours is simply not backed by science as diabetes is a chronic condition which cannot be cured. While turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and may help control blood sugar, it is not a cure for diabetes. Managing diabetes requires a combination of lifestyle changes, medication, and medical supervision. Believing in quick fixes can be risky. Always consult a doctor before making any changes to your diabetes treatment."
Medical Dialogues Final Take
Diabetes is a chronic condition that cannot be cured, especially not in 17 hours, as falsely claimed in the AI-generated video. The Medical Dialogues Fact-Check Team confirmed the video is entirely fake. While turmeric, particularly curcumin, may aid blood sugar regulation, there is no scientific evidence that it can cure diabetes
Hence, the claim by the user is FALSE.
