An Instagram reel claims that coconut water with lemon juice dissolves gall stones. The claim by the user is FALSE.

Claim

In an Instagram reel, it is claimed that coconut water with lemon juice dissolves gall stones. In the reel hindi.health.gyan, it is said, "People will die by consuming poison, but they won’t tell you the cure for stones. In this unknown world, you should know the treatment for stones. For this, if you mix two spoons of lemon juice in coconut water and drink it for a few days, the stone dissolves and comes out. Share this video with those in need and follow us for more information."

The post can be accessed here.

Fact Check

The claim is FALSE. There are various types of stones found in the body, but the post does not specify them. Additionally, gallstones can only be removed through surgical procedures. Also larger kidney stones have to be surgically removed only and cannot be removed with any home remedies

The most common types of stones are found in the kidney and gall bladder.

What are Gallstones?

Gallstones, medically termed cholelithiasis, are hardened formations that develop in the gallbladder or bile ducts, usually due to an imbalance in the bile’s composition. Bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver, can form stones ranging in size from tiny particles to larger lumps, potentially causing pain or complications if left unmanaged, as noted by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Gallstones are typically categorized into two types. The more prevalent cholesterol gallstones develop when there is an excess of cholesterol in the bile, leading it to crystallize. In contrast, pigment gallstones consist mainly of bilirubin—a substance produced during the breakdown of red blood cells—and are more frequently seen in individuals with liver diseases or blood disorders that elevate bilirubin levels.

How are gallstones treated?

Treatment for gallstones can involve both surgical and non-surgical methods, depending on factors like symptom severity, stone size, and location. Gallbladder removal remains a cornerstone in effective gallstone management.

The most common surgical option is cholecystectomy, which comes in two forms: laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a minimally invasive surgery, and open cholecystectomy, used in more complex cases involving significant inflammation or infection. For stones located in the common bile duct, a non-surgical technique called Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is often employed to extract them without removing the gallbladder. In rare scenarios, shock wave lithotripsy may be used to fragment the stones, sometimes paired with ursodiol, a bile acid that helps dissolve cholesterol stones.

What are kidney stones?

Kidney stones, also known as renal calculi, nephrolithiasis, or urolithiasis, are hard, stone-like deposits that form in one or both kidneys when mineral concentrations in the urine become too high. These stones can be composed of various substances, including calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, uric acid, cystine, struvite, and magnesium ammonium phosphate.

Kidney stones come in different sizes. Small stones can often pass on their own by increasing fluid intake, which also dilutes the urine and helps prevent new stones from forming. Larger stones, however, usually need medical treatment through surgical or non-surgical methods to be removed.

Beyond causing acute pain and urinary issues, kidney stones are associated with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal failure, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and diabetes, highlighting their broader impact on overall health.

What are the treatment strategies for kidney stones?

Kidney stone treatment offers various effective options to relieve pain and prevent complications. Some small kidney stones can be treated by increasing fluid intake, allowing them to pass naturally, while larger stones may require surgical or non-surgical procedures for removal. One of those procedures is Shock Wave Lithotripsy (SWL) uses sound waves to break stones into smaller pieces, enabling them to pass more easily through the urinary tract. Cystoscopy and Ureteroscopy involve inserting thin instruments via the urethra to visualize, fragment, or remove stones located in the urethra, bladder, or kidneys. For larger or more complex stones, Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is often preferred; it involves a small incision in the back to access the kidney with a nephroscope, sometimes using laser energy for fragmentation. These minimally invasive procedures support faster recovery and personalized care.

What health benefits does coconut water offer?

Coconut water the clear liquid from young, green coconuts of the Cocos nucifera plant—is widely appreciated as a natural, hydrating beverage, especially in tropical regions. Its high potassium content makes it excellent for replenishing electrolytes. Beyond hydration, it contains bioactive enzymes such as acid phosphatase, catalase, dehydrogenase, diastase, and peroxidase, which may support digestion. Nutritionally, it offers vitamin C, B-complex vitamins (B1, B2, B6), folic acid, pantothenic acid, free amino acids, and auxins, along with vital minerals like sodium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, contributing to overall health and well-being.

How does lemon benefit health?

Lemon, is an evergreen tree species native to South Asia, particularly Northeast India. Nutritionally, a peeled lemon contains about 17 calories, and an unpeeled one offers 22 calories. One tablespoon of lemon juice provides 3 calories, while a quarter cup contributes 13 calories—delivering 31% of daily vitamin C needs, 3% folate, and 2% potassium. Lemon is widely valued in culinary, medicinal, and nutritional contexts due to its rich profile of bioactive compounds. Its juice supports weight management and helps manage hypertension. Components such as citric acid, alkaloids, leaf oil, and nutrients are traditionally used to address a range of conditions including osteoporosis, insomnia, asthma, nausea, motion sickness, acne scars, throat infections, fever, scurvy, and pH imbalances.

Can coconut water with lemon juice dissolve kidney and gall stones?

The claim made in the post is unclear, as it does not specify whether it refers to kidney stones or gallstones. While coconut water and lemon juice are natural fluids that may help in preventing kidney stones and supporting the passage of small kidney stones by increasing urine output, there is no scientific evidence to support the idea that consuming them together for a few days can dissolve any type of stone in the body. It's also crucial to note that gallstones generally do not dissolve with home remedies and usually require medical intervention for removal.

Coconut water is widely recognized for its hydrating properties and may also contribute to kidney stone prevention. Research by Dr. R. Kalai et. al. suggests that coconut water might assist in breaking down kidney stones. The study emphasizes that its high potassium content helps alkalize urine, which can reduce the likelihood of stone formation.

Likewise, an article published in The Natural Beverages noted that coconut water may help prevent kidney stones by decreasing the formation of crystals and stones within the urinary tract.

Responding to the claim Dr Amit Mittal, Clinical Director & HOD, Gastroenterology, Marengo Asia Hospitals Gurugram said, "Coconut water and lemon juice are good for keeping you hydrated and have some nutrients. These drinks, lemon juice and coconut water can help prevent calcium-based kidney stones from forming. They do this by increasing the citrate in your urine, which helps stop these stones from growing. Drinking enough of these fluids can also help make urine, which might help small kidney stones pass on their own.

There's not much strong evidence that mixing coconut water and lemon juice can dissolve kidney stones or gallstones that are already there.Gallstones are usually made of cholesterol or bilirubin. The acids in lemon juice and the potassium in coconut water can't break down these types of stones. If gallstones or kidney stones start causing problems you usually need to see a doctor away. Sometimes you might need surgery like a laparoscopic cholecystectomy to remove the gallstones.

Coconut water and lemon juice are healthy. They shouldn't replace medical treatment for stones. You should drink them as part of a diet and talk to a doctor if you have concerns, about kidney stones or gallstones."

Dr. Shashidhar Shree Niwas, Clinical Director & HOD, Nephrology and Renal Transplantation, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram further added, "Coconut water does not dissolve kidney and gall stones in the absolute sense. However, it helps in passing stones and prevents formation of new stones because it has high citrate content and also helps in hydration which prevents stone formation."

Medical Dialogues Final Take

The claim circulating in the post does not clarify which type of stones, kidney or gallstones, it refers to. While both coconut water and lemon juice have shown potential in helping prevent kidney stones individually, there is no scientific evidence to support the idea that their combination can dissolve existing kidney stones. Additionally, gallstones generally cannot be dissolved through natural remedies and typically require medical intervention. There is no medical consensus or credible research backing the claim that drinking coconut water with lemon juice for a few days can dissolve stones in the body.

Therefore, the claim made in the viral video is False.
