Fact Check: Can coriander and fenugreek seeds fix cholesterol in 21 days?

An Instagram post claims that coriander (dhaniya) and fenugreek (methi) seeds fix cholesterol in 21 days. The claim is FALSE.
Claim
In an Instagram post, it is claimed that coriander and fenugreek seeds fix cholesterol in 21 days. In the reel by drirfan94, it is said, "If you often feel tired, weak, or lethargic — if you prefer lying down over working, experience muscle pain, nerve discomfort, or joint aches — cholesterol could be the hidden culprit behind these symptoms. If you haven’t had your cholesterol tested yet, get it done as soon as possible. And if it’s high, I have a simple home remedy using ingredients already in your kitchen. Take half a teaspoon each of whole coriander seeds and fenugreek seeds (methi dana), soak them overnight in a glass of water. In the morning, boil the mixture thoroughly, strain it, and drink it. InshaAllah, if followed daily for 21 days, this remedy can help normalize your cholesterol levels. You’ll feel more energetic, active, and stronger. If anyone you know suffers from high cholesterol, do share this with them."
The claim can be accessed here.
Fact Check
The claim is FALSE. Coriander and fenugreek seeds may offer cholesterol-lowering benefits, but there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to support the claim that they can fix cholesterol within 21 days.
What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is essential for cell membrane structure, hormone synthesis, and bile acid production. It circulates in the blood bound to lipoproteins, primarily low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is often termed “bad cholesterol” because excess levels contribute to atherosclerotic plaque formation, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Conversely, HDL is called “good cholesterol” as it helps remove cholesterol from peripheral tissues through reverse cholesterol transport, exerting anti-inflammatory and protective effects. Dysregulation of cholesterol metabolism, influenced by genetics, diet, lifestyle, and comorbidities, remains a key driver of cardiovascular disease worldwide.
Can cholesterol be fixed?
Cholesterol reduction is achievable and plays a key role in preventing cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. Statin therapy is the first-line intervention for those above recommended thresholds, effectively lowering cardiovascular events. Furthermore, risk modifiers and detection of asymptomatic atherosclerosis can reclassify moderate-risk individuals into higher-risk groups, prompting earlier therapy. However, variations in guidelines, inconsistent thresholds, physician inertia, and poor patient adherence often limit effective cholesterol control. Targeted screening and individualized treatment strategies are therefore essential to optimize primary prevention.
What Are the Health Benefits of Coriander (dhaniya) and Fenugreek (methi) Seeds?
Coriander holds importance in both cooking and traditional healing practices. Different parts of the plant—seeds, leaves, roots, and fruits—are used for a variety of medicinal purposes. Historically, coriander seeds have been utilized to help reduce pain and inflammation.
They are also widely known for their digestive benefits, often used to ease issues like gas, nausea, diarrhea, and indigestion. These effects are believed to stem from coriander’s ability to stimulate the liver, promoting the release of bile and digestive enzymes, which in turn improves digestion and supports healthy gut movement.
Fenugreek, among the oldest known medicinal plants, is highly regarded for both its nutritional and therapeutic value. Its seeds contain abundant fiber, phospholipids, glycolipids, essential fatty acids such as oleic, linolenic, and linoleic acid, along with choline, vitamins A, B1, B2, C, niacin, nicotinic acid, and many other bioactive compounds. Globally, it is commonly used as a spice to enhance the flavor and aroma of foods. Beyond its culinary role, fenugreek is recognized for its medicinal benefits, demonstrating antidiabetic, anticancer, cholesterol-lowering, antioxidant, and immune-boosting properties.
Can coriander and fenugreek seeds fix cholesterol in 21 days?
Although some studies suggest that coriander and fenugreek seeds may help lower cholesterol, there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to support the claim that they can entirely fix cholesterol within only 21 days.
Coriander, a staple in culinary use, is gaining attention for its medicinal benefits which includes cholesterol reducing properties. Research by Muhammad Jawad Iqbal et. al. highlights its anti-inflammatory properties, ability to regulate blood sugar, cholesterol-lowering effects, and role in promoting digestive health. But the study does not claim that coriander can completely fix cholesterol.
Similarly, a study by Veda Prachayasittikul et. al. emphasizes coriander’s wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant, neuroprotective, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory actions, along with cholesterol reduction and possible therapeutic benefits in migraine management. The study doesnot mention that coriander can completely fix cholesterol.
Fenugreek is known for its therapeutic properties which includes cholesterol lowering properties. According to Ethan Basch and colleagues, Fenugreek may stimulate labor, support digestion, and act as a general tonic to boost metabolism and overall well-being. It is also suggested that oral consumption of fenugreek seed powder may help lower blood sugar levels and reduce cholesterol. Again this study suggest that coriander helps lower the cholesterol but cannot entirely fix it.
Further, research published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences reported that fenugreek can safely enhance glycemic control and improve lipid profiles, highlighting its potential role in managing metabolic health.
Coriander and fenugreek seeds may have cholesterol-lowering benefits, but there is no proof that they can fix cholesterol within 21 days.
Dr. Gautam Rege, M.B.B.S., D.N.B. (General Medicine), D.N.B. (Cardiology), Consultant at Interventional Cardiologist, Jupiter Hospitals, Thane told Medical Dialogues, "The idea that coriander or fenugreek seed can lower cholesterol levels in under 21 days (and in many cases much sooner) seems to be a popular idea in our society; however, it is important to recognize that both of these cooking spices have some health-promoting compounds that may relate to heart health. Coriander seeds have been shown to improve digestion, improve overall levels of "bad" cholesterol, and some studies have suggested the ability to reduce levels. Fenugreek seeds are particularly high in soluble fiber, which helps slow down the absorption of both fat and sugar. Either, with purposefully eating it in quantity over time, may assist you in achieving healthy cholesterol levels, especially more so if consumed with a balanced and nutrient-dense meal intake. However, it is not realistic to assume that there will be a noticeable drop in cholesterol within 3 weeks by consuming either or both. Cholesterol, in fact, does "drop", however, progress towards positive, relative changes happen over time with consistent and sustainable lifestyle changes, including strength, cardiovascular, and functional fitness changes, food choices, and often medication as needed. Natural options can be beneficial, however, they do not take the place of medical intervention. And lastly, a bottom line mark may be the most hopeful and interesting; conscientious, thoughtful, small changes, while small, do help your health in a positive way, however, patience, as well as, consistency is more effective for your health than immediacy."
To this, Dr Gulshan Rohra, Consultant, Cardio-thoracic Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central added, "Coriander and fenugreek seeds are often highlighted as traditional home remedies for cholesterol control, and for good reason. Coriander contains essential oils and antioxidants that may improve fat metabolism, while fenugreek has compounds like saponins and fiber that can bind with cholesterol in the gut and help flush it out. People who soak these seeds overnight and drink the water in the morning often feel lighter and notice better digestion. That said, the claim that they can “cure cholesterol” in exactly 21 days should be taken cautiously. High cholesterol is influenced by many factors diet, genetics, activity level, and overall lifestyle. While these seeds may support healthier numbers, they work best as part of a broader routine that includes exercise and mindful eating. Natural remedies are valuable allies, but relying solely on them without medical guidance may leave the bigger risk unaddressed."
Medical Dialogues Final Take
Coriander and fenugreek seeds can play a supportive role in managing cholesterol as part of a balanced lifestyle. However, there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus that they can fix cholesterol within 21 days.
Hence, the claim is FALSE.
