An Instagram reel claims that ghee, turmeric, and black pepper drink prevents or cure PCOD. The claim is FALSE.

Claim

In an Instagram reel it is claimed that ghee, turmeric, and black pepper drink prevents or cure PCOD. In the reel by chatterbitespodcast it is said, "You will never have PCOD, you will never have fibroids in your uterus, gall bladder stones will never form, you will never get a "ghanta" (swelling), any woman who has periods, regardless of the flow, should take a spoonful of ghee from the first day to the fifth day continuously. You should drink it on an empty stomach in the morning. Add a pinch of turmeric and a pinch of black pepper to it.

It will ease period pains, regulate the flow, and balance your periods. You will never have PCOS, fibroids, gall bladder stones, or swelling. But you must drink it while sitting in a squat position in the morning on an empty stomach. Make sure to start drinking from the first day of your period and continue for the next 3-5 days until your periods end. When your periods stop, reduce it to half a spoon.

If your periods stop at the age of 48 or 50, then take half a spoon of turmeric in warm water with a pinch of black pepper. After this, also drink a herbal tea made of giloy and tulsi leaves. This will purify your body and any hot flashes and menopause-related problems will be resolved.

For girls whose periods haven't started yet, those around the age of 11-13, give them a full spoon of ghee along with 10-15 neem leaves made into a chutney. Mix the ghee in warm water and give them the neem chutney to eat. They will start getting their periods on time. It will also improve the quality of their eggs, as nowadays many girls are becoming infertile. Parents should give them one spoon of ghee mixed in warm water once a month, along with neem chutney, turmeric, black pepper, and ghee mixture. After that, make them sit in a squat position and drink this concoction."

Fact Check

The claim by the user is FALSE. There is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to support the claim that consuming a drink made with ghee, turmeric, and black pepper can prevent or cure PCOD.

What is PCOD?

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a hormonal condition influenced by genetic and lifestyle factors. Normally, ovaries release fully matured eggs during the menstrual cycle. In PCOD, they often release immature or partially matured eggs, which may form multiple fluid-filled cysts, causing the ovaries to enlarge. The condition is marked by elevated levels of androgens (male hormones), leading to symptoms like irregular menstruation, abdominal weight gain, male-pattern hair thinning, and sometimes infertility.

How can PCOD be Prevented?

Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD) cannot be entirely prevented, as it is largely influenced by genetic and hormonal factors. However, regular physical exercise, maintaining a healthy body weight, and adhering to a balanced diet can significantly reduce the risk of developing PCOD or help manage its symptoms. Regular exercise helps in improving insulin sensitivity and maintaining hormonal balance, which is crucial for women with PCOD. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can also help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce the risk of associated conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. A nutritious diet rich in whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, while limiting processed foods and sugars, can support overall hormonal health. Additionally, abstaining from tobacco is essential, as smoking can worsen insulin resistance and increase the risk of complications related to PCOD. By following these healthy lifestyle habits, women can better manage their health and potentially mitigate some of the factors contributing to PCOD.

Can PCOD be cured?

As per UNICEF, PCOD cannot be permanently cured due to its genetic and hormonal nature. However, its symptoms can be effectively managed through lifestyle interventions—such as healthy eating, regular exercise, and stress management.

What are the Nutritional Benefits of Ghee, Turmeric and Black Pepper?

Ghee provides substantial nutritional value thanks to its rich composition. Derived from milk, cream, or butter by removing nearly all water and non-fat solids, ghee is composed of approximately 99.5% fat and under 0.5% moisture. It is an excellent source of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K, which are essential for maintaining healthy vision, strong bones, immune system support, and proper blood clotting. Ghee also contains phospholipids that aid in maintaining cellular structure and function.

Turmeric commonly known as Haldi, is derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa L. and is recognized for its vibrant orange-yellow hue, primarily due to its key active compound, curcumin. It possesses notable anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. In Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric has long been used as a remedy for various ailments, including respiratory issues such as asthma, allergies, and bronchial hyperactivity, as well as liver disorders, anorexia, rheumatism, diabetic wounds, cough, runny nose, and sinusitis.

Black pepper, often referred to as the “King of Spices,” is prized not only for its culinary use but also for its wide range of therapeutic benefits. It contains bioactive compounds such as piperine, which contribute to its antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and lipid-lowering effects. Research suggests that black pepper may help combat infections and mitigate oxidative damage. Additionally, it exhibits anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and neuroprotective properties.

Can ghee, turmeric, and black pepper drink prevent PCOD?

There is no scientific evidence that a drink made with ghee, turmeric, and black pepper can prevent or cure PCOD. While these ingredients may have individual health benefits, they cannot address the underlying hormonal issues of PCOD.

Ghee, a type of clarified butter commonly featured in traditional diets, is celebrated for its numerous health benefits. A study by Anil Kumar et. al. highlighted the characteristics of ghee, particularly its high content of short-chain fatty acids, which contribute to its superior digestibility and potential anti-cancer properties. The study also emphasized ghee's role as a carrier for fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and essential fatty acids, such as linolenic acid and arachidonic acid.

Similarly, a review published in Prostaglandins & Other Lipid Mediators explored the potential of ghee as a complementary therapy, particularly for managing conditions like osteoporosis and arthritis.

Certain evidence highlights the therapeutic potential of turmeric in PCOD management. In a meta-analysis, Wenjuan Shen et. al. found that curcumin the key active compound in turmeric positively impacts patients with PCOD by improving inflammatory markers and enhancing glucose and lipid metabolism.

Black pepper, a staple in kitchens worldwide, is gaining scientific recognition for its medicinal value. A study published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicine reports that black pepper exhibits a broad spectrum of pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiepileptic properties.

It can be concluded that the claim is FALSE.

Dr. Saumya, Consultant - Obstetrics & Gyaenocology, Regency Hospital, Gorakhpur in a conversation with The Medical Dialogues Fact Check Team said, "It is a misconception that a drink made with ghee, turmeric and black pepper can cure PCOD. Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is a very complex hormonal and metabolic condition that cannot be reversed through a single home remedy. While some ingredients like turmeric have anti-inflammatory properties, and black pepper may aid absorption, their role is supportive at its best—not curative. PCOD is mainly driven by certain factors such as resistance to insulin, imbalance of hormones in the body, genetics and lifestyle patterns. Management usually requires a good comprehensive approach that includes a balanced amount of nutrition, regular physical exercises, management of weight and in some cases medical intervention as well. Completely relying on home remedies can also delay the appropriate diagnosis and treatment, which may also lead to certain complications like irregular cycles and issues such as infertility and metabolic disorders as well.

Turmeric can also be part of a healthy diet. By reducing the inflammation and supporting the digestion, it also contributes to overall well-being, but it should not be considered as the standalone treatment. It is also significant for the women to understand that management of PCO is a long-term well-being and requires consistency.

Misinformation around the natural cures also creates false hope and may also lead individuals to ignore evidence-based care. If someone is experiencing certain kinds of symptoms such as irregular periods, gain in weight, acne or excessive growth of hair. It is also essential to consult a good medical expert. Early diagnosis and a structured plan of management can also improve the outcomes and quality of life as well. It is also important to recognise that PCOD usually varies from person to person. What works for one individual may not work for any other, which is why personalised medical advice is very much essential. Social media trends often oversimplify complex conditions since they promote quick fixes that are not backed by the sciences. These kinds of claims should be approached by women with caution, and they should always prioritise evidence-based healthcare. Including healthy diet elements is also beneficial for the overall health of women."

Dr. Nivedita Jha, Senior Consultant - Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Laparoscopic & Hysteroscopic Surgeon, SPARSH Hospital Infantry Road, Bangalore further added, "The claim that it is mixture of ghee, turmeric, and black pepper can also cure PCOD is not supported by the medical sciences. PCOD is a multifactorial condition which mainly involve imbalance of hormones, metabolic dysfunction and resistance of insulin. It cannot be resolved through a single dietary intervention or through any home remedy, no matter how the individual ingredients may seem

Turmeric is the item which is mainly recognised for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and black paper also enhances its absorption in the body. When Ghee is consumed in ideal amount, it can provide essential fats. These benefits are usually the general wellness contributors and they do not target the underlying causes of PCOD. Excessive consumption of food items which contain good number of calories are mainly ghee, especially without any professional guidance may also worsen certain weight related concerns which are closely associated to progression of PCOD.

Structured and sustained approach is required for the effective management of PCOD. Modification in lifestyle continue to remain the foundation for the same – this mainly include a balanced, nutrient rich diet, continuous physical activity, adequate amount of sleep and regulation of stress. In some cases, medical supports such as hormonal therapy or insulin-sensitising treatment are also necessary, depending on the individual symptoms

It is also very significant to understand that PCOD does not present uniformly. Each individual experience it in different way, which makes personalised care very much important. Trends circulating on social medial can also lead to delay in appropriate diagnosis and proper management.

Through the incorporation of traditional ingredient items can also support the overall health of an individual and they should not be mistaken. Women should always prioritise the evidence based medical advice and immediately consult a qualified healthcare profession for the proper evaluation and medical treatment as well.

Management of PCOD, is about consistency, awareness and a well-balanced approach rather than the quick fixes. Sustainable changes in lifestyle, combined with the right medical guidance, continue to remain the most reliable way to control the symptoms and improve long term health outcomes."

Medical Dialogues Final Take

The claim that a combination of ghee, turmeric, and black pepper can prevent or cure PCOD is FALSE. While turmeric may help manage inflammation, and black pepper can enhance the absorption of nutrients, there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus that these ingredients can regulate menstrual cycles or address the hormonal imbalances associated with PCOD.

Hence, the claim is FALSE.
