Fire at ESIC Hospital Mumbai: 6 killed, 145 injured; Minister announces Compensation
Mumbai: An unfortunate incident of fire breaking into 5-storey Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital in MIDC, Marol, in Andheri has taken away six lives and injured more than 145 people.
The victims were immediately rushed to the other hospitals; RN Cooper Hospital, Thackeray Trauma Hospital in Jogeshwari, Holy Spirit Hospital and Seven Hills hospital in Andheri, Hiranandani hospital in Powai, and Siddharth hospital in Goregaon.
"Almost all patients have been rescued. Operations are still on and the fire brigade is checking whether anyone is still trapped inside," the official informed ANI.
According to the media report, the fire broke on the fourth floor of ESIC, filing the hospital with smoke.
Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar updated the agency news that the cause of fire is not yet known, the matter is under investigation.
In a conversation with media, the Labour Ministry stated, "Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Labour & Employment, Santosh Kumar Gangwar announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident, Rs 2 lakh each for those who have serious injuries and Rs 1 lakh each for those with minor injuries."
It further informed that five people were reported to have died due to suffocation in the accident while several others admitted patients and their attendants were rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals with the help of firefighters, doctors and staff of the hospital.
After the ascertain incident, the labour minister held a meeting with other officials of the ministry and ESIC hospital and directed them to extend all possible help to the kin of the victims, the doctors from Delhi rushed to Mumbai to help in tackling the situation.
The minister, Gangwar along with Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employment and Director General, ESIC would be visiting the hospital on to oversee relief work and meet the victims and their families.
