Beyond Beauty: Exploring the Psychological Benefits of Skin Care Routines - Ms Sumalatha Vasudeva
Beauty and perceptions related to it mainly revolve around physical appearances. These perceptions are also influenced by the cultural stereotypes such as attractive people are intrinsically good, expected to be happier and have more rewarding life experiences than unattractive individuals.
Physical appearances and attributes are also an important criterion in creating an individual's first impression.
Amongst, the many physical attributes, skin and skin care typically holds much significance. The saying 'Beauty is only skin deep' emphasizes the role of a person's intrinsic qualities, and therefore upholds good mental and emotional health for good skin health.
Hence, a good skin care routine also has many psychological benefits and will make one feel beautiful apart from just looking beautiful.
A good relationship with self is crucial for a happy life, and it all begins with understanding the differences and accepting them. It is normal to bother about our appearance as it also impacts our self-confidence, moods and emotions. It is also alright to feel upset about acne or sunburn or skin not appearing as per our expectations.
Furthermore, it is important to understand that this happens to everybody. Instead, unnecessary comparison with others adds on to the stress, especially in these times of social media influence. Not all skin types are the same, and there is no perfect skin type and texture.
The same thing extends to a skin care routine as well, and there is no universal skin care routine that is the best or suits everybody. A mindful skincare routine that suits each one plays a vital role in self-care. Simple and basic things, like washing the face and moisturizing it, can be comforting and can give a good feeling.
Skincare has the power to improve our self-worth. People with a good skincare routine are likely to have better mental and emotional health. It reduces stress, promotes self-care, boosts self-worth, enhances productivity and improves social connections.
Skincare and mental health are connected, and anything that affects either, impacts the other aspect. Mental health issues can worsen skin conditions like acne and eczema, and in turn these affect mental health. It is crucial to balance overall well-being.
Stress and anxiety can further aggravate it. Mindful skin care routines can help cope with these challenges and is important to maintain good mental health. The condition of skin is a reflection of how we feel inside and is an indicator of our mental state.
Prioritizing self-care and regular self-care practices such as these not only improves skin health, but also contributes to overall well-being, thus creating a balance between physical and mental health.
